BERLIN: German cyber crime authorities have uncovered a massive online network of at least 30,000 people who share child pornography and exchange advice on how to sedate and abuse minors, law enforcement authorities said on Monday. Peter Biesenbach, justice minister in the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia, said investigators were stunned by the scale of the network and that a special task-force has been set up to find the suspects and bring them to justice. "People log on to a chat, not on the dark web, but on messenger services on the normal web," said Biesenbach. "They get instructions from other users on what sedatives one should give children in order to abuse them. "A discussion ensues on which children can be abused," he added. Some users admit that they had long wanted to be part of such networks but had never dared to do so. They get encouragement from more experience users. Biesenbach said the task-force would have to act quickly before the chats were … [Read more...] about Germany uncovers massive online child abuse network

Macquarie offer for Open Fiber stake could speed single Italy network
MILAN/ROME: Infrastructure fund Macquarie has made an offer to buy all or part of Enel's 50per cent stake in its broadband joint venture Open Fiber in a move that could help speed up the creation of a single Italian network operator. The Italian government sees building ultra-fast broadband as a priority and has called on former phone monopoly Telecom Italia (TIM) and Open Fiber to reach an accord quickly on creating a single network. TIM has been in talks for months over a merger of its fibre network assets with those of Open Fiber, but differences over issues such as governance and regulation have thwarted efforts. "We believe that the entrance of Macquarie ... could be a strong catalyst towards the creation of the single network as it could speed up the negotiation given Enel's sceptical stance on the matter," Italian broker Fidentiis said. Open Fiber is a wholesale-only broadband operator jointly owned by Enel and state lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP), while TIM … [Read more...] about Macquarie offer for Open Fiber stake could speed single Italy network
Nokia’s broadband business boosted as COVID-19 pressures networks
REUTERS: Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia is seeing a pick up in orders as its broadband clients race to upgrade networks to meet higher user demand during the COVID-19 pandemic, a company executive said. Many customers had planned to grow their network by 30per cent to 40per cent over the next few years assuming a similar growth in traffic, but COVID-19 brought in that traffic growth overnight, Sandy Motley, Nokia's President of Fixed Networks, told Reuters. "Customers will need to accelerate the growth that they had planned in the future, and we've seen customers already talking to us about that," she said, adding orders for fixed networks were up 22per cent in the first quarter. Nokia boosted its fixed-line networks business with the 2016 purchase of Alcatel-Lucent in a 15.6 billion-euro (US$17 billion) deal. The unit's revenue fell 18per cent year-on-year in the first quarter and 5per cent between 2018 and 2019 but Motley said the decline was due to business cycles. … [Read more...] about Nokia’s broadband business boosted as COVID-19 pressures networks
‘Gold mine’: European police target secret phone network used by crime rings
THE HAGUE: An encrypted phone network widely used by thousands of criminals has provided police with a "gold mine" of information, leading to numerous arrests, drug seizures and even foiled assassination attempts, French and Dutch authorities said on Thursday. Police from the two countries targeted the encrypted service Encrochat and have been monitoring it for months, officials announced at the headquarters of Eurojust, the European criminal justice cooperation agency based in The Hague. Since the beginning of the year, they said they had been able to follow, in real time, the communications of many organised crime networks dealing in narcotics and illegal weapons, among other things. "This gave us a veritable gold mine of information" about organised crime rings, Dutch national police commissioner Jannine van den Berg said. In France more than 60 officers monitored the communications of thousands of criminals, Eurojust said. Dutch police said they had arrested more than a … [Read more...] about ‘Gold mine’: European police target secret phone network used by crime rings
LinkedIn users ditch polite networking for real talk on US race and inequity
NEW YORK: "This is white supremacy. This is institutionalised racism," Aaisha Joseph, an executive assistant in New York City, posted on Microsoft Corp's LinkedIn in early June, calling out the Black leadership vacuum at tech giants. In another post on LinkedIn, Ian Davis, a Black advertising executive, called out his former bosses at a global advertising agency, for telling him he had an "attitude problem" after speaking out. Uncomfortable remarks like these, which have generated thousands of responses and millions of views, were once shunned at the office and confined to no-holds-barred forums like Twitter Inc. But they are now increasingly common on LinkedIn, known more for its polite discourse where users networked their way to their next job. As US companies grapple with addressing racism and inequality stoked by nationwide protests, workers sheltering in place during the coronavirus pandemic have staked out LinkedIn as the next battleground for unvarnished discussion in … [Read more...] about LinkedIn users ditch polite networking for real talk on US race and inequity
