Canterbury asparagus grower fined $26k for exploiting 13 workers
RNZ RNZ’s podcast The Detail looks at the issues as the fruit picking industry desperately needs more workers than ever before. Canterbury asparagus grower Christopher Gray who was ordered to pay exploited workers $50,000 in October, has been fined a further $26,000. The Employment Relations Authority previously ordered Gray, a sole trader operating as Motukarara Asparagus, to repay $50,000 to 13 workers for unlawful deductions, minimum wage arrears, and holiday pay entitlements. Ten of the workers were seasonal migrant workers from Fiji, two were migrant workers and one a New Zealander. The authority said Gray’s breaches of the employment law were “more egregious” because most workers were vulnerable to exploitation, living in New Zealand under the seasonal migrant scheme.
