Ha Long Bay and northern rice terraces are among the spotlights. German public broadcaster ARD is finishing a special program to introduce the beauty of Vietnam through its nature, culture and people. Philipp Abresch, Southeast Asian bureau chief of the broadcaster in Singapore, said a team has been traveling across Vietnam to capture the best of its landscape and culture, especially of the minority groups. The team visited some of the country’s most popular destinations including Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and the ancient town Hoi An, all of which are highly-recommended destinations in Southeast Asia. Vietnam Bay Named among World’s Most Surreal Landscapes The U.S.-based Daily Telegraph has announced the list of world’s top-ten surreal landscapes, including Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, a world natural heritage recognized by the UNESCO, the National Administration of Tourism said on its website July 28. Halong Bay features 3,000 limestone pillars rising out of the emerald waters on the northwest coast of the Gulf of Tonkin. Local legend has it that the islands were created by giant dragons, summoned by the gods to fight foreign invaders. The bay, located in the East Sea about 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Hanoi, was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994. The UK Daily Telegraph has named Vietnam among the world’s happiest places. UNESCO heritage site Ha Long Bay and a mountainous district with breathtaking rice terraces in northern Vietnam have entered a list of 50 most beautiful places. Mu Cang Chai, a district to the west of the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai, is in travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler's list for its stunning view of terraced fields, which have been an attraction to both Vietnamese and foreign tourists. The fields turn into beautiful sights when they change their color from green to gold in September and October. The popular UK news website Telegraph in September also named the rice terraces among 14 most “surreal” landscapes on earth.
