Monday was an atrocious day at the box office, and yesterday even worse, and you can see the results for yourself below. Not that Monday is ever a great moviegoing day (except whenever there’s a big event movie in the marketplace), but those movies in the top 10 dropped 70% or steeper from their Sunday results. Tuesday, given that it’s a discount move day, largely sees a spike over Monday’s numbers. That didn’t happen. While we’ve included the weekend theater counts, they’re not reflective of Monday and Tuesday’s business as several cinemas have closed. I’m told whatever cinemas in New York that were open Monday reported (both L.A.’s and NY’s forced closures went into effect Tuesday AM). Los Angeles’ box office figure were also included in Monday’s numbers below, through I hear theaters were pretty empty. … [Read more...] about Box Office Fades To Black As Coronavirus Shuts Down 4K North American Theaters Into May: Where The Studios Stand & What’s Next?

In an unprecedented time of bad news for box offices and movie theaters, there’s a sliver of good news to be shared. Variety reports that over the weekend Christopher Nolan’s time-bending film Tenet has passed the $200 million mark at the global box office, despite the pandemic, having grossed $207 million to date. While $200 million at the box office is certainly something to celebrate, Tenet is still struggling stateside, raking in only $6.7 million domestically. Last weekend, Warner Bros. said Tenet grossed $20 million in its debut weekend in the U.S., however per Variety Warner Bros. reportedly fudged the numbers and included weekday preview screenings and the long holiday weekend in that report. Tenet grossed just $9 million dollars from Friday to Sunday during its opening weekend. Yikes. … [Read more...] about Rakes In $200 Million at the Global Box Office, Struggles Domestically
Interstellar, for its part, rode from Sunday through Thursday at No. 1, and has cumed $8.24M in the re-release. Tenet goes on September 4 in the Middle Kingdom after beginning offshore rollout on August 26. Coronavirus-imposed capacity and screening limits are still likely to be in place in China, though perhaps somewhat less stringently. Tenet was shot with IMAX cameras and almost all IMAX screens there are expected to be open by the time the movie hits theaters. This is good news. … [Read more...] about ‘1917’ Leads China Weekend; Korea Has Yet Another Hit With ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ & ‘Greenland’ Makes Hay In France – International Box Office
