REUTERS: Hershey Co said on Wednesday sales of gums and mints have taken a hit as social distancing protocols spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic discouraged people from participating in gatherings. The company, the maker of Ice Breakers and Kisses, said its second-quarter performance would also be impacted due to a decline in its food service business and stunted candy sales at airports and stores. "We have also experienced a decrease in retail foot traffic and volatility in consumer shopping and consumption behavior across several areas of our portfolio, which has negatively impacted sales of our portable and on-the-go consumption products," the company said in a filing http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/47111/000004711120000027/0000047111-20-000027-index.htm. The health crisis triggered a long lockdown, temporarily closing everything from restaurants to malls and forcing consumers to work from home. Hershey has for long been betting on its nutritious and on-the-go snack … [Read more...] about Hershey says mint, gum sales hit as lockdowns restrict social gatherings

Horrifying reality of hospital workers in the pandemic exposed in TV show
For the medics on the frontline of the pandemic life will never be the same again. They have witnessed whole families fight for their lives, seen loved ones torn apart and dealt with staff on the brink of breakdown - and all while enduring their own personal battles. Now, a new film, by Emergency Medicine Doctor, Saleyha Ahsan, exposes the true toll that the pandemic has taken on workers at her hospital, Ysbyty Gwynedd, in Bangor, through the destructive second wave of the virus between November and February. And she wants to show the heartbreaking stories of staff and patients to ensure their struggles haven't gone in vain. Saleyha says: “I feel that I have changed forever. I'm more cynical, I've got level of anxiety that I never used to have before. “We might have the Covid pandemic now but I think we're going to have a mental health pandemic following hot on its heels.” One doctor, Nathan Pictor, is all too aware of how true this is, as he broke down while working on … [Read more...] about Horrifying reality of hospital workers in the pandemic exposed in TV show
This Singaporean chef wants to usher in a new age of Asian cuisine
If there’s one thing chef Ace Tan has in spades, it’s ambition . Three years ago, along with chef and business partner David Lee, he opened a fine-dining restaurant of lofty scale; one that even far more established chefs would think thrice about. The restaurant had all the trappings of a big-name fine-diner: Two-storey shophouse, sombre dining room, starched tablecloths and a unique cuisine they labelled New Asian, which essentially translated to Asian ingredients parsed to fit into the traditional Western fine dining format. When Restaurant Ards – an acronym for Asia, Roots, Distinct, Singular – shut barely six months later, few pundits were surprised. The duo lacked the experience, maturity and recognition needed for a project of that scale to succeed. But that was then. Now 38, Tan recently returned to Singapore’s dining scene after a year-long stint as executive sous chef at Michelin-listed Flowerchild Restaurant in Seoul. Today, at the newly minted 1-V:U … [Read more...] about This Singaporean chef wants to usher in a new age of Asian cuisine
Kentucky Derby will open doors to spectators
REUTERS: The Kentucky Derby, which was rescheduled for Sept. 5 due to the novel coronavirus, will allow spectators onto the grounds to watch the Run for the Roses even as COVID-19 infections surge across parts of the United States, Churchill Downs Racetrack said on Thursday. "Our team is deeply committed to holding the very best Kentucky Derby ever, and we will take all necessary steps to protect the health and safety of all who attend and participate in the Derby," said Churchill Downs Racetrack President Kevin Flanery in a statement. Normally run on the first Saturday in May, the first jewel of North American thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown instead finds itself this year sandwiched between the Belmont and Preakness Stakes. The Belmont was run last Saturday without spectators in Elmont, New York and won by Tiz the Law. The Preakness has been rescheduled for Oct. 3. The longest continually held annual sporting event in the United States, the Kentucky Derby is also one of … [Read more...] about Kentucky Derby will open doors to spectators
Interest in urban farming sprouts amid COVID-19 outbreak
SINGAPORE: After Madam Tan Swee Jee’s husband failed to find okra on a recent trip to the market, she revived her interest in farming and began planting again. The retiree in her 60s had started organic farming a few years ago but grandchildren and other activities left her little time to tend to her garden. As Singapore hunkered down for the “circuit breaker” period, she found time and reason to grow not just okra, but tapioca, papaya, herbs and other vegetables. “We rely on other (countries) for our food, if they don’t sell to us we have nothing to eat,” she said in Mandarin. “This way, at least I can still have lady’s fingers.” Farm supply shops and companies that run urban farming workshops told CNA that there has been more interest in home farming since around February or March. Singapore raised its Disease Outbreak Response System Condition (DORSCON) level to Orange on Feb 7 after some locally transmitted cases of COVID-19 were detected, sparking a brief spate of … [Read more...] about Interest in urban farming sprouts amid COVID-19 outbreak
