From AirPower to Zune, a decade of tech and companies that died
This story is part of The 2010s: A Decade in Review, a series on the memes, people, products, movies and so much more that have influenced the 2010s. While they inspire a bit of nostalgia -- and frequently skeuomorphism -- yesteryear's gadgets are the compost of technology, the old crap out of which new products grow. As part of the natural product cycle, it's hard to describe them as really "gone." Sometimes they just feel dead because a company doesn't update or even mention them for a while. The Apple iPad Mini, Mac Mini, MacBook Air, Mac Pro and iPod were on our endangered list for years before Apple surprised us with upgrades to all. On the other hand, the company's AirPort router line and Time Capsule backup drive also were on a long death watch until they finally landed on Apple's vintage and obsolete product list this year. Training college could be forced to repay millions in government loans
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against Unique International College Pty Ltd following a joint investigation with NSW Fair Trading. It comes just weeks after the business was deregistered by the industry regulator. The ACCC alleges Unique offered prospective students a free laptop, and in doing so, represented that the courses were free or would be free if the consumer did not earn more than around $50,000 per annum. The watchdog will also allege that Unique’s conduct, including its marketing and enrolment system and its dealings with some consumers, was “in all the circumstances, unconscionable, in contravention of the Australian Consumer Law”. DREAM HOME Until July this year, Unique International College was the owner of a $5.8 million “palatial estate” in Sydney’s Kenthurst, replete with 12-car garage, tiered 14-seat home cinema, marble bathrooms, an inground pool, a … [Read more...] about Training college could be forced to repay millions in government loans
Aston Martin races to become player as global luxury brand
The Aston Martin showroom in the heart of London’s Mayfair district features a car, of course. But it is surrounded by an array of other products the company is selling as it positions itself as a luxury brand, not just a sportscar maker. There are Aston Martin branded cashmere stolls (£230), luggage, a picnic hamper (£1,950), briefcases and washbags (£149). The Dover Street showroom is key to chief executive Andy Palmer’s mission to transform the 105-year-old company into a “luxury company and not just a car company.” The showroom, which is a couple of doors down from the younger royals former nightclub haunt, Mahikis, is the culmination of the vision of Aston Martin’s chief creative officer, Marek Reichman, who is leading the company’s push into new markets ranging from clothing to apartment buildings and even personal submarines. “Dover Street mixes art, culture, shopping, luxury and elegance. It’s the perfect place for … [Read more...] about Aston Martin races to become player as global luxury brand
