Commentary: The start of subject-based banding – is grouping classes by CCAs the best option?

· May 20, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: Education Minister Ong Ye Kung announced the momentous move to end streaming in secondary schools by 2024 in March. Schools are now encouraged to do away with the practice of grouping students into form classes by academic ability and instead experiment with innovative ways to group students. The idea is that this will encourage children from different backgrounds to interact with each other. In the long run, this would lead to better social mixing and greater societal cohesion – or so is thought. Commentary: Streaming out. Subject-based banding in. How are parents reacting?

· March 7, 2019 ·

SINGAPORE: Minister of Education Ong Ye Kung recently announced this week in Parliament that the current approach to streaming will be phased out . From 2024, students entering secondary school would no longer carry the labels of Normal Technical, Normal Academic or Express. Instead, they will move forward unencumbered by fears of being pigeonholed or labeled a failure, and be free to focus on learning at their own pace in each subject. The traditional stigma associated with these labels will be removed. Such broad-brush streaming – that assumes that a child who is low performing is unable to perform across all subjects – will be replaced by full subject-based banding, where students will take a combination of subjects at three different levels based on their PSLE scores: General 1, General 2 and General 3 (G1, G2, G3), with the latter being the highest level. When the new system kicks in, lower secondary school students will be allowed to take more subjects at a higher … [Read more...] about Commentary: Streaming out. Subject-based banding in. · January 26, 2021 ·

Bavarian radio station Bayern 3 found its name trending worldwide after a radio host took a dislike to the latest release by K-pop boy band BTS . The group's army of loyal fans took to social media accuse the station's Matthias Matuschik of racism after he blasted the band's cover of Coldplay's "Fix You." What did the Bayern 3 host say about BTS? Matuschik compared the band to the COVID-19 virus, describing them as "some crappy virus that hopefully there will be a vaccine for soon as well." "These little a**holes brag about the fact they covered 'Fix You' from Coldplay, this is blasphemy," he said. "For this you will be vacationing in North Korea for the next 20 years!" Sensing his comments might cause upset, Matuschik said his comments were not aimed at South Korea. "You can't accuse me of xenophobia," he said. "I have a car from South Korea. I have the coolest car ever." Watch video 02:03 Share BTS: Military service looms Send Facebook … [Read more...] about BTS: K-pop boy band racism storm hits German radio station
