Todd Spangler Detroit Free Press Published 2:01 p.m. UTC Jul 19, 2018 WASHINGTON — Automotive officials Thursday blasted President Trump’s proposed tariffs on imported autos and auto parts, with trade groups saying a tax of 25 percent on imports will increase costs on American-made cars as well, resulting in decreased production and jobs losses. While thanking Trump for his leadership, former Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt, head of the American Auto Policy Council made up of Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler, said the three are “very concerned that the positive effects of the president’s policies could be undermined by tariffs.” The Commerce Department on Thursday kicked off a daylong hearing on President Donald Trump's proposal to raise taxes on imported autos and auto parts, a plan that automakers say could hurt business and cost American jobs. The hearing at the Commerce Department's headquarters in Washington, D.C., will include … [Read more...] about Auto leaders at hearing say tariffs will cut U.S. jobs, raise consumer costs

U.S. job growth seen strong in February; wages to rebound
U.S. employers likely maintained a brisk pace of hiring in February and boosted wages for workers, which is expected to give the Federal Reserve the green light to raise interest rates next week despite slowing economic growth. Nonfarm payrolls probably increased by 190,000 jobs last month, according to a Reuters survey of economists, in part as unseasonably mild weather buoyed employment in the construction sector. The economy created 227,000 jobs in January. The Labor Department will publish its closely watched employment report on Friday at 08:30 a.m. (1330 GMT). Fed Chair Janet Yellen signaled last week that the U.S. central bank would likely hike interest rates at its March 14-15 policy meeting. "February employment appears to be the final hurdle for the Fed to raise interest rates in March, and it's likely to be easily jumped," said Ryan Sweet, senior economist at … [Read more...] about U.S. job growth seen strong in February; wages to rebound
Viet Nam and S Korea strike a trade deal
South Korea wants to buy things from Viet Nam. People there want garlic, honey, ginger and other things from this country. Viet Nam also wants to buy things from South Korea. People here want car parts and electronic equipment from that country. The governments of the two countries have come up with a plan. That is less tax should be charged on certain things that go from one country to the other. HA NOI (VNS) — The Republic of Korea has chosen Viet Nam as its first FTA partner that can export products such as garlic, ginger and honey with tariffs reduced to zero per cent over the next 10-15 years. The information was shared at a conference to inform Vietnamese businesses about the recently signed FTA between the two countries on Thursday, organised by the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI). The VCCI said the current export taxes applied to these products in the RoK stood from 241 to 420 per cent, but under the Viet Nam-Korean Free Trade Agreement (VKFTA) signed on … [Read more...] about Viet Nam and S Korea strike a trade deal
