When Charlie Deutsch walked into Venetia Williams' yard as a fresh-faced teenager, Houblon Des Obeaux was the poster boy everyone looked up to. A regular in some of the best races, including Gold Cups and Grand Nationals, he gained dozens of fans over the years, full of admiration for his brave efforts on the racecourse. Last weekend they were united as one, when tragically the veteran bowed out at Sandown, a place he and Deutsch lit up barely a month earlier. Now there is an empty stable, a void that cannot be filled, but his 23-year-old jockey is ever grateful they were able to share such special days together. "We relied on him to give us a good winner every season," said Deutsch. "And he never let us down. Every day since he was a three-year-old he had been in the same stable, overlooking the fields. "It's strange and sad he's not there any more. "He loved what he did and it came as a shock to us all. "I rode him a week before the race and he felt brilliant. "At home he would come … [Read more...] about Charlie Deutsch hopes to boost stable with big race victory after death of star horse

In Mass. House race, Pressley wins fight for ‘soul’ of party
BOSTON (AP) — Ayanna Pressley is all but assured of becoming the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts, the latest example of the Democratic Party’s embrace of diversity and progressive politics as the recipe for success in the Trump era. The 44-year-old’s upset victory against longtime Democratic Rep. Michael Capuano in Tuesday’s primary sets the stage for Pressley to represent an area once served by Tip O’Neill and John F. Kennedy. Her win comes at the tail end of a primary season in which black politicians have made a series of advances. In nearby Connecticut, Jahana Hayes is on track to become that state’s first black woman to win a congressional seat if she prevails in November. And black politicians in three states — Florida, Georgia and Maryland — have won the Democratic nomination for governor, a historic turn for a country that has elected just two black governors in U.S. history. Greeting voters at a Boston … [Read more...] about In Mass. House race, Pressley wins fight for ‘soul’ of party

World hits another alarming carbon emissions mark
The world hit another carbon dioxide emissions milestone in 2018, with an estimated 2.7 percent increase in emissions since last year, according to a report published Wednesday in Environmental Research Letters, a scientific journal. This follows an increase of 1.6 percent in 2017 from 2016. The Global Carbon Project, an organization that produced the report, estimates that global CO2 emissions from fossil fuel sources will hit a record high of more than 37 billion tons this year. Just two years ago, there was cause for cautious optimism. From 2014 to 2016, world emissions seemed to be stabilizing. "We thought, perhaps hoped, emissions had peaked a few years ago," Rob Jackson, a professor at Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and leader of the Global Carbon Project, said in a news release. "After two years of renewed growth, that was wishful thinking." The Global Carbon Project report estimates that CO2 emissions in the U.S. alone ticked … [Read more...] about World hits another alarming carbon emissions mark
