BEIJING: China is considering additional measures to increase its flagging birth rate, more than four years after ending its controversial one-child policy. For decades, China enforced strict controls on additional births in the name of preserving scarce resources for its burgeoning economy. But its plunging birth rate is now seen as a major threat to economic progress and social stability. On Thursday (Feb 18), the National Health Commission issued a statement saying it will conduct research to “further stimulate birth potential". It said the initiative will focus first on northeastern China, the country’s former industrial heartland that has seen a major population decline as young people and families depart for better opportunities elsewhere. The region comprising the three provinces of Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang saw its total population decline for the seventh straight year by 427,300 in 2019 over 2018. Authorities said last week that registered new births fell 15.3 … [Read more...] about China considers new actions to lift flagging birth rate

Commentary: While the swine flu pounds China’s pork industry, meat eaters must stay calm
BEIJING: Since the Chinese ushered in the Year of the Pig in 2019, they have had to forego their passion for pork, after the African swine flu was first detected in hog herds in the country last August. In the immediate aftermath, China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs took proactive measures to curb the spread of the disease, which has been fatal for pigs, but has so far been harmless to humans. Yet these swift actions have not curtailed the spread of the disease. As of end-April, swine flu cases have been reported in most provinces in China. Even off the southeast coast of Hainan island, local officials announced last week that six farms had over 500 hogs infected and 146 have died. The outbreak was initially noticed in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province. After China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs imposed quarantines and introduced culling programmes, official counts by agriculture officials put the number of pigs culled from August 2018 to April … [Read more...] about Commentary: While the swine flu pounds China’s pork industry, meat eaters must stay calm
Exclusive: China’s FAW considers acquiring BMW partner Brilliance in US$7.2 billion deal – sources
REUTERS: FAW Group is looking at acquiring Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd, BMW's main Chinese partner, in deals that may cost it some US$7.2 billion and then take it private, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The potential acquisition by state-owned FAW, China's No. 2 automaker, comes at a time when Brilliance's top shareholder Huachen Automotive Group is on the brink of bankruptcy, having defaulted on 6.5 billion yuan (US$1 billion) in debt obligations late last year. Under plans currently being discussed, FAW would first purchase 30.43per cent of Brilliance owned by Huachen and 11.89per cent owned by the state-controlled Liaoning Provincial Transportation Investment Group, said the sources. It would then make a mandatory bid for the rest of Brilliance's shares. It is considering offering about HKUS$11 per share for the two-stage deal, representing a 70per cent premium to its average share price over the past month of HKUS$6.48. China says latest COVID-19 outbreak caused by imported cases
SHANGHAI: China's recent COVID-19 outbreaks in the northeast have come from travellers entering the country or contaminated frozen food imports, the National Health Commission (NHC) said on Saturday (Jan 16). NHC Minister Ma Xiaowei made the comments at a government meeting, where he also said the virus was spreading to rural areas and that the handling of the recent situation had exposed how prevention and control measures had been relaxed. "Since December 2020, epidemic clusters have occurred in Beijing, Sichuan, Liaoning, Hebei and Heilongjiang," a statement posted on the NHC's website said citing the briefing by Ma. "They mainly have the following characteristics. Firstly, they are all imported from abroad, caused by travellers from overseas, or contaminated cold-chain imported items."
