The Colorado attorney general, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and district attorneys from across the state are teaming up to halt and prosecute a massive surge in identity theft cases related to the state’s unemployment insurance program. “We need to go after these scammers. This activity is criminal, it is reprehensible and we will do all we can to find the people practicing it and bring them to justice,” said Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser on a joint press call Thursday announcing the creation of the Colorado Unemployment Fraud Task Force. The state labor department has flagged about 1.1 million unemployment claims as fraudulent since the pandemic began, a count that surpasses the number of legitimate claims made in the state, executive director Joe Barela, said. Prior to the pandemic, in 2019, the state investigated about 90 suspected cases of unemployment insurance fraud. Potential losses of around $7.5 billion … [Read more...] about Colorado law enforcement joining forces to crack down on unemployment insurance fraud

Rockies Recap: Trevor Story hits first homer of spring, but Brewers beat Colorado with eight runs off Mychal Givens, Carlos Estévez
Brewers 12, Rockies 3 (9 innings) Friday at Salt River Fields On the mound: After tossing two scoreless innings in his Cactus League debut earlier this week, southpaw Austin Gomber put up another strong performance with two more scoreless innings. So far, Gomber (acquired in the Nolan Arenado trade from St. Louis, with whom he had a 1.86 ERA in 14 appearances in 2020) is looking up to the task of clinching the last open spot in Colorado’s rotation. At the plate: In his 2021 Cactus League debut shortstop Trevor Story blasted a 407-foot, three-run homer off Milwaukee righty Jordan Zimmermann. Besides that, Colorado only had four hits overall. Worth noting: Milwaukee hammered right-handers Mychal Givens and Carlos Estévez — both of whom are expected to be key parts of the Colorado bullpen this year — in the fourth and fifth innings to break the game open. Virtual city council meetings may not end in Colorado when COVID does
It was March 2020, and things were quickly going sideways for Avon Town Manager Eric Heil. The trouble for the mountain town near Vail wasn’t simply rising COVID-19 case counts, but at the moment, a rapid proliferation of obscene hand-drawn images on the computer screens of those attending the town council’s first remote meeting on Zoom. “My head was spinning,” Heil said of the hacking incident that also peppered the proceedings with profane and racist commentary. “It was one more act of random chaos.” While Avon’s Zoom-bomb experience might have been a wake-up call on how to run a public meeting in the grips of a fast-spreading disease , it also marked the genesis of what could become a more open and inclusive form of local governance in Colorado. “There’s more of an expectation that more government meetings will be online and that there will be more of a chance for participating online,” said Jeff Roberts, executive director of the Colorado Freedom of Information … [Read more...] about Virtual city council meetings may not end in Colorado when COVID does
Jeffco, Arapahoe tax measures go down to defeat; Brighton’s mayor recalled
Efforts to raise taxes — or hang on to taxpayer money already collected — went down to resounding defeat in Denver’s suburbs, with money for jails in Jefferson and Arapahoe counties a losing item in Tuesday’s elections. Those were two of numerous notable issues and races in metro area communities in the fall election.Other results Tuesday night showed: — Lakewood Mayor Adam Paul had 55% of the vote and challenger Ramey Johnson, a councilwoman, 45% in the bid to run Colorado’s fifth-largest city. The Lakewood race attracted big bucks, especially from outside groups . — Brighton Mayor Ken Kreutzer will lose his seat as part of a recall election Tuesday . Voters were saying yes to ousting the mayor by a 71% to 29% margin. A movement against Kreutzer blossomed following the Brighton council’s July firing of the city manager, who said at the time of his dismissal that he was being let go because he had discovered unnecessarily high water rates being charged to residents. — … [Read more...] about Jeffco, Arapahoe tax measures go down to defeat; Brighton’s mayor recalled
DA won’t reinvestigate 3 deaths at the hands of Denver law enforcement
Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said she won’t launch new investigations into the deaths of Marvin Booker , Jessica Hernandez and Michael Marshall at the hands of Denver law enforcement. Not because she can’t reopen the cases, as previously stated , but because she won’t. All three cases — referred to as “murders” by Mayor Michael Hancock recently amid tensions over George Floyd’s death — began with the previous district attorney, Mitch Morrissey. “My predecessor decided a lot of cases, and I don’t go back and re-evaluate those cases unless there is something that comes to light that would lead me to believe there was new evidence or it wasn’t investigated adequately,” McCann said. She took office in 2017 and noted that since then she has filed cases against two Denver police officers, a deputy and a Lakewood police officer. The city paid settlements to the families in all three of the older cases, but no one was charged criminally. To reopen them, McCann said, … [Read more...] about DA won’t reinvestigate 3 deaths at the hands of Denver law enforcement
