Malaysian Health Ministry proposes that interstate travel be postponed for Hari Raya

· April 15, 2021 ·

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Health Ministry has proposed that interstate travel be postponed for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri, as daily COVID-19 cases continue to rise. Speaking after a ministry event on Thursday (Apr 15), Health Minister Adham Baba said the proposal to put off approval for interstate travel was due to two reasons. “One, there are new variants of COVID-19 in the community. Two, the vaccination programme is still ongoing, so we need to control the situation,” he said. He noted that many parties have appealed to the government to permit interstate travel for this major festival. On whether exceptions could be made for those who have completed their vaccination, Dr Adham said the ministry was still waiting for findings from the World Health Organisation and the US' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If the ministry’s proposal to halt cross-state travel for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations is accepted, this will be the second year … [Read more...] about Malaysian Health Ministry proposes that interstate travel be postponed for Hari Raya

Not so Naiise after all: Vendors voice anger at founder Dennis Tay and say rot began much earlier

· April 16, 2021 ·

SINGAPORE - Accusations of sob stories and delayed as well as missing payments are emerging from suppliers and partners of beleaguered retailer Naiise a day after founder Dennis Tay announced he was liquidating the company and filing for personal bankruptcy. Several brand owners took to social media to express frustration at how Mr Tay blamed Covid-19 for poor business and the company's undoing. Many said late and missing payments and mismanagement of funds have been a problem since as early as 2016, calling into question Tay's intentions. Co-founder of Nom Nom Plush, Ong Yin Hao, told The Straits Times he dislikes "how (Tay) angled it as 'Covid did me in'". Owed around $15,000 for his food-themed plushies, Mr Ong faced late payments on and off since consigning with Naiise in 2015. He continued as "their sales records were good", and he would eventually get paid - although six to eight months late. "They were expanding, but we vendors were constantly owed money," said Mr Ong, … [Read more...] about Not so Naiise after all: Vendors voice anger at founder Dennis Tay and say rot began much earlier

It’s not the end after Tokyo – veteran diver Mun Yee’s game for Hanoi

· April 16, 2021 ·

PETALING JAYA: The Tokyo Olympics may not be the final international outing for national diver Leong Mun Yee. The 36-year-old veteran is game for another SEA Games stint end of this year if Malaysia Swimming want to tap into her experience to combine with the younger divers. It will be a history-in-the-making achievement if Mun Yee makes it to the SEA Games in Hanoi as it will be her 12th appearance. No other Malaysian athlete has lasted that long when it comes to competing in the SEA Games and Mun Yee wants to show that she is still determined and committed to keeping up with the sport. “I wanted to call it a day at the Olympics earlier and I’ve informed Malaysia Swimming about it, ” said Mun Yee. “But then I was asked to consider whether I want to continue on a bit as the SEA Games is just four months after we come back from the Olympics. “If I am needed, I will continue until the SEA Games, ” said Mun Yee. Mun Yee is the most decorated Malaysian diver in the SEA Games … [Read more...] about It’s not the end after Tokyo – veteran diver Mun Yee’s game for Hanoi

Investigators focus on foul play behind Malaysia missing plane

· March 14, 2014 ·

An investigation into the disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines jetliner is focusing more on a suspicion of foul play, as evidence suggests it was diverted hundreds of miles off course, sources familiar with the Malaysian probe said. In a far more detailed description of military radar plotting than has been publicly revealed, two sources told Reuters an unidentified aircraft that investigators suspect was missing Flight MH370 appeared to be following a commonly used navigational route when it was last spotted early on Saturday, northwest of Malaysia. That course - headed into the Andaman Sea and towards the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean - could only have been set deliberately, either by flying the Boeing 777-200ER jet manually or by programming the auto-pilot. A third investigative source said inquiries were focusing more on the theory that someone who knew how to fly a plane deliberately diverted the flight hundreds of miles off its scheduled course from Kuala Lumpur to … [Read more...] about Investigators focus on foul play behind Malaysia missing plane

Some facing higher taxes despite lower revenue

· April 17, 2021 ·

PETALING JAYA: In the last few years, tailor David Tan (not his real name) has been paying RM8,000 in taxes upfront annually and because of poor business due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he had expected to pay less. So, he was puzzled when he was told to pay about RM5,000 extra in taxes upfront. Tan, who operators a tailor shop at a shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur, does not know why he has to fork out additional money for tax. “Normally, I pay a lump sum of about RM8,000 in advance every year. But this year, I was told to pay an extra 30% despite my business being affected, ” he said when contacted yesterday. For businesses, after the end of each financial year, the company will usually have to submit its accounts for auditing purposes. In Tan’s case, he was told that he was short of RM5,000 after the company’s account was audited by a tax consultant. He said like many other small businesses, he had struggled to find customers during the movement control order period. “I … [Read more...] about Some facing higher taxes despite lower revenue
