We Never Saw It Coming

· December 6, 2020 ·

My wife suddenly took up doing puzzles. Our daughters surprised us by gifting us a stationary bike to use at home even though we are both members of a health club. One of our daughters recently bought two tandem kayaks to use by the whole family. I have seen more people out walking or riding their bikes than before the pandemic. These are just some of the changes that we never saw coming or could have anticipated a year ago. These new patterns of our family activities were due to, no surprise, the pandemic. Some patterns of human behavior can of course be predicted.  Based on past trends and from studies of past epidemics and pandemics, we can observe that the media, public health officials, and government leaders respond similarly. Their responses follow four stages of grief , beginning first with denial, and then moving to the second stage of panic , the … [Read more...] about We Never Saw It Coming

Clubhouse Is Booming. So Is the Ecosystem Around It

· January 2, 2021 ·

About a month ago, Marcin Brukiewicz scored an invite to Clubhouse and started spending hours on the audio app. Brukiewicz, a Polish physician, joined rooms discussing the future of healthcare and medical technology, and met people from all around the world in spaces like the Healthcare Innovators Club and the Global Health Club. Brukiewicz sometimes talks, but he mostly listens. “I’m an introvert, so I don’t like to speak up,” he says. He’s also not a native English speaker, and sometimes finds the language barrier intimidating. Then a friend complained that it’s difficult for moderators to know who to call on in a large audience, and Brukiewicz had an idea: What if there was a Clubhouse feature where you could type your thoughts? Over the weekend, Brukiewicz built Ask Clubhouse , a simple web tool for managing audience Q&As on Clubhouse. Moderators can set up a “board,” link it to a Clubhouse room, and invite audience members to type their questions or comments, which the … [Read more...] about Clubhouse Is Booming. Why Grease 2 Was The Most Important Movie Ever

· February 25, 2021 ·

“I want a whole lot more than the boy next door I want hell on wheels” From “ Cool Rider ” by Michelle Pfeiffer Nerds and badasses. Up until at least the early 1980’s you could witness these different humans in the anthropological petri dish known as the American high school cafeteria. Bad asses would be at one table and nerds at another - with little cross-pollination. And it felt as though people were pre-destined from birth to be either one or the other forever. Source: Michael Dobrinski on Unsplash, used with permission In retrospect, these seemingly polar opposite groups actually had something in common. They were both a little off center from the more traditional “normal” kids. Badasses seemed a bit dangerous like the “Greasers” from The Outsiders . They often wore leather jackets, were into cars and motorcycles, smoked, got into fights and often didn’t feel particularly compelled to play by the rules. They seemed both exciting and forbidding. On the … [Read more...] about Why Grease 2 Was The Most Important Movie Ever

When My Father Became an Elderly Skirt-Chaser

· February 25, 2021 ·

My father and me Source: Used With Permission of Elizabeth Marcus In the last five years of my father’s life, he changed in a very disturbing way I could not understand. I am an only child, so my father turned to me, almost immediately after my mother died, for my help in finding a housekeeper—with privileges. At 88 he was unprepared to live alone, but his solution was to pay someone to provide companionship and sex . His plan was completely out of character for the thoughtful, principled father I’d always loved and admired, one who had, as far as I’d known, been happily and faithfully married to my mother for 60 years. How could such a person, a feminist, suddenly see sex as a function any women he hired should be expected to provide? The handy explanation, that old age had made him lecherous, did not feel right. Talking it out shed no light. When I reminded my father that his plan was, among things, illegal, he accused me of being a prude. “Where have you been? … [Read more...] about When My Father Became an Elderly Skirt-Chaser
