The state parties of Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) stood behind their party's national leader, Armin Laschet , to stand as candidate for chancellor in national elections set for September, it emerged on Monday following a meeting in Berlin. Hesse state premier Volker Bouffier, who attended the meeting of major CDU figures, told Germany's dpa news agency that Laschet has the support of majority of leading CDU figures. The news gives Laschet an important boost, but the final decision on the candidacy has not yet been made, as Laschet's rival, Markus Söder, Bavarian state premier and leader of the CDU's sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), on Sunday declared his interest in the candidacy. That set the scene for a week of uncertainty for the CDU/CSU alliance since Söder currently enjoys more popularity than Laschet among the German population at large — and among CDU voters. Deliveries of Sputnik V May Contribute to Germany’s Vaccination Campaign, Minister Says
"The crucial question for me is whether there will be something in the second and third quarter, because then it would contribute to this vaccination campaign. Merkel is not seeking a fifth term, after leading Germany for 16 years. Laschet, 60, declared Sunday that he was prepared to run for chancellor in the national elections to be held in September. Markus Soeder, 54, leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU) of Bavaria, the sister party in Merkel’s governing coalition, also expressed his willingness to run for the post Sunday but said he would settle the issue amicably with Laschet. Laschet, who is currently the prime minister of Germany’s most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, was elected as CDU leader in January. As a centrist politician, he is widely seen as a candidate who would continue Merkel’s legacy, although he has clashed with her over coronavirus restrictions. Soeder, an astute political operator, strongly supported Merkel during the pandemic; … [Read more...] about Germany’s CDU Backs Party Chairman as Governing Coalition’s Candidate for Chancellor
Germany, US are set to revive security cooperation
When the US and German defense chiefs sit down together in Berlin on Tuesday, there will be pressure mounting on multiple fronts. Russian troops appear to be massing along Ukraine's border. Israel is suspected of sabotaging an Iranian uranium enrichment facility. An Afghanistan withdrawal deadline looms. Easy solutions to these and other global security problems are in short supply, and the alliance remains divided over several of them. Yet both sides say they are committed to working together. "German and American soldiers stand side-by-side in a number of operations," a German Defense Ministry spokesperson told DW in a statement, describing the US-German partnership as "intense and growing."
