KUALA LUMPUR: The rubber glove manufacturers association of Malaysia, the world's largest maker of medical gloves, on Wednesday (Mar 25) warned of a chronic shortage of gloves after a surge in demand from hospitals swamped with coronavirus patients. The Malaysian Rubber Gloves Manufacturers Association (MARGMA) also said production would be cut because of a virtual one-month lockdown in the country, during which they are allowed to operate with only 50 per cent staff. "Production costs will increase tremendously by at least 25 to 30 per cent ... Fortunately, buyers are aware of this cost factor and have come forward to assist and cooperate to bear the cost as well," it said in a statement. Disposable rubber gloves are indispensable in the global fight against the coronavirus, yet a month's lockdown in stricken Malaysia where three of every five gloves are made has upended the supply chain and threatens to hamstring hospitals worldwide. COVID-19: US lifts ban on Malaysian medical glove maker amid shortage
KUALA LUMPUR: The United States has lifted a ban on a Malaysian medical glove maker it had accused of using forced labour, a government statement showed, amid a surge in demand for personal protective equipment to fight the coronavirus crisis. The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Tuesday (Mar 24) said disposable rubber gloves made by WRP Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd after Mar 16, 2020, will be admissible at all US ports of entry. The ban placed on WRP in September "was revoked based on recent information obtained by CBP showing the company is no longer producing the rubber gloves under forced labor conditions", CBP said in the statement. "We are very pleased that this effort successfully mitigated a significant supply chain risk and resulted in better working conditions and more compliant trade," said Brenda Smith, CBP's executive assistant commissioner for the office of trade. WRP, which has the capacity to produce more than 11 billion gloves a year, could not immediately … [Read more...] about COVID-19: US lifts ban on Malaysian medical glove maker amid shortage
Malaysia’s hand sanitiser, rubber glove manufacturers in overdrive as demand spikes over COVID-19 fears
KUALA LUMPUR: With demand for sanitising products surging in Malaysia amid the COVID-19 outbreak, local manufacturers are struggling to fulfill the requests because they, too, are running out of materials. Producers of rubber gloves, meanwhile, are facing worker shortage as they ramp up production to meet international demand. Local manufacturers of hand sanitisers and disinfectants told CNA that even though orders have increased up to five-fold, they could not produce more when they could not lay their hands on ethanol - the main ingredient to sterilise the microbes - as well as plastic bottles and bottle accessories. It does not help that most of these materials are imported from China, which is badly hit by the novel coronavirus and has seen more than 70,000 confirmed cases and over 2,000 deaths . LOCAL MANUFACTURERS FACE DIFFICULTIES IN BUYING ETHANOL Malaysia has 22 confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far, with 15 of them recovered and discharged from hospitals. … [Read more...] about Malaysia’s hand sanitiser, rubber glove manufacturers in overdrive as demand spikes over COVID-19 fears

JOHANNESBURG: Ben Stokes and Mark Wood made a double strike shortly before tea, breaking stubborn South African resistance and setting up a 191-run win for England on the fourth day of the fourth and final Test at the Wanderers Stadium on Monday (Jan 27). The win clinched a 3-1 series victory for England. Set to make a world record 466 to win, South Africa reached 181 for two before Stokes bowled home captain Faf du Plessis for 35. In the next over man-of-the-match Wood dismissed Rassie van der Dussen for 98. He went on to claim four for 54 to finish with match figures of nine for 100. Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma shone briefly but South Africa were bowled out for 274. Van der Dussen and Du Plessis batted for all but 13 minutes of an extended two-and-a-half hour afternoon session to give South Africa some hope, making the England bowlers toil on a hot afternoon.
