WhatsApp now requires you to share data with Facebook — or stop using the app

· January 7, 2021 ·

Source: Harish Jonnalagadda / iMore Facebook acquired WhatsApp back in February 2014 for a staggering $19 billion . At that time, the service had 500 million users; it now boasts over 2 billion users today. Facebook tried a lot of methods to monetize WhatsApp over the years, introducing business accounts to allow brands to chat with customers and even turning the platform into an e-commerce destination . That said, the app was left as its own entity, and Facebook didn't meddle too much into the core service itself. That's changing now. WhatsApp has updated its privacy policy , and the new terms requires users to share data with Facebook as well as its associated companies, including Facebook Payments, Onavo (a web analytics service and controversial VPN), and CrowdTangle (a social analytics tool). The data that will be shared with Facebook and its companies as part of the new terms includes the following: Profile name Profile picture IP address Your phone … [Read more...] about WhatsApp now requires you to share data with Facebook — or stop using the app

Stop the Presses! Dog Owners Are Happier

· July 27, 2016 ·

Source: RossHelen/Shutterstock The eternal question over which animal is a better pet—cats or dogs—can now be answered with data: Dogs win by a hair; they make their owners happier. There's an enduring list of topics that arouses vigorous debate among most groups of people. Some questions are serious and some less so, such as liberal versus conservative ideologies, abortion, school uniforms, or whether there's a relationship between video games and violence. Another surefire way to start a debate is to bring up the question of whether dogs or cats make better pets . This discussion typically contains a lot of passion and many anecdotes, but very little hard data. Recent research published in Anthrozoos may change this. When weighing the relative merits of cats versus dogs as pets, it is natural to try to use as facts information based on the popularity of these animals, but the answer turns out to be a bit of a tossup. There are more pet cats than pet dogs in the United … [Read more...] about Stop the Presses! Dog Owners Are Happier

U.S. to Pause J&J Vaccine Rollout After Rare Blood-Clot Reaction

· April 13, 2021 ·

Photo: Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Imag In a major blow to national vaccination efforts, the FDA and CDC recommended suspending the use of Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot COVID vaccine because at least six people had developed severe blood clots after receiving it. The affected vaccine recipients were all between the ages of 18 and 48, with the clots showing up 6 to 13 days after immunization. One woman died, and one is in critical condition. The agencies will investigate whether the issue is more widespread, but for now at least, those who suffered a poor reaction represent a miniscule percentage of the near 7 million Americans who have received the shot. The government’s decision immediately set off a debate about the wisdom of halting a vaccine’s usage over what appears to be such a rare reaction. In a joint statement , the FDA and CDC said that  “Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare,” but that “We are recommending a pause in the use … [Read more...] about U.S. to Pause J&J Vaccine Rollout After Rare Blood-Clot Reaction

Joe Biden, Kamala Harris Tweet Support for Daunte Wright’s Family

· April 13, 2021 ·

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris each tweeted their support Monday for the family of Daunte Wright, the 20-year-old black driver killed after he evaded arrest on an outstanding warrant Sunday in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Brooklyn Center suffered a second night of rioting on Monday — ironically, as the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd continues. Both towns are in Hennepin County; Brooklyn Center is a suburb. Biden tweeted earlier: Today I’m thinking about Daunte Wright and his family — and the pain, anger, and trauma that Black America experiences every day. While we await a full investigation, we know what we need to do to move forward: rebuild trust and ensure accountability so no one is above the law. — President Biden (@POTUS) April 12, 2021 Harris followed up: Prayers are not enough. Daunte Wright should still be with us. While an investigation is underway, our nation needs justice and … [Read more...] about Joe Biden, Kamala Harris Tweet Support for Daunte Wright’s Family

· April 13, 2021 ·

BOSTON (CBS) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health on Tuesday told all providers in the state to stop administering the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine after federal health officials called for a “pause” as they investigate “rare and severe” blood clots in six people who received the single-dose vaccine. “Today the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a statement regarding the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine recommending a pause in its use out of an abundance of caution,” DPH tweeted. “The Department of Public Health is notifying all Massachusetts providers to pause administration of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, effective immediately.” According to state data released Monday, 181,034 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered in Massachusetts. More than 6.8 million have been administered nationwide.
