27,350 surfing injuries cost $37m as ACC’s prevention campaign kicks off

· April 10, 2021 ·

ACC In 2019, ACC helped more than 9000 people who had trampoline-related injuries - 79 per cent of them were children aged under 13. This story contains an image of a facial injury. Mick Andrews is sitting on his surfboard out amongst the waves on Mangawhai Beach as the sun rises over the East Coast. He takes a moment to soak up the surrounds of his home beach and remembers a moment that could have changed his life. Andrews, 40, suffered a nasty head injury 22 years ago, at Easter. He knows how lucky he is to still be able to do what he loves. “These days surfing for me is an escape,” he says. “To be out in the water and in that beautiful scenery is pretty special. Maybe it’s a sign of maturity, but it’s good to just appreciate the act of doing it rather than just going out there to ride big waves or push myself.” READ MORE: 'A dream since I was a kid': Jamie 'Chip' Andrews on owning an iconic Taranaki surf shop Surfing starlet Ava Henderson gets her head … [Read more...] about 27,350 surfing injuries cost $37m as ACC’s prevention campaign kicks off

You can buy entire Spanish villages for less than the price of a flat in London – including a 6-house hamlet for £369k

· March 22, 2021 ·

SPAIN has entire towns and villages for sale for less than the price of a London flat. House buying in the UK has hit a ten-year high during the pandemic, meaning a surge in prices. The average cost of a house in the UK is now up by £15,000 - in London this is now £644,631. However, families who look across to Europe could get a much better bargain and much more for their money. In Spain, there are a number of deserted regions which have been left behind by former locals due to younger people leaving the area for the cities for work and opportunities. Dubbed España vacía, or “empty Spain," there are more than 3,000 areas in Galicia that have dwindling populations. It is also common in Italy, which has led to the prevalence of €1 homes to encourage people to move to the area. In Spain, you can buy entire towns for a bargain, due to them being left abandoned. In northern Spain, a few hours from Leon, you can buy the hamlet of Xerdiz for just £369,000. While … [Read more...] about You can buy entire Spanish villages for less than the price of a flat in London – including a 6-house hamlet for £369k

North Korean generals laugh as Kim Jong-un launches a nuke-ready ballistic missile in a terrifying military test

· March 25, 2021 ·

CHILLING pictures show North Korean generals laughing as Kim Jong-un raises hell with a cruise missile. Yesterday, the rogue state fired two short-range ballistic rockets into the Sea of Japan during a terrifying weapons test. Photos have emerged today of the tyrant's generals clapping and laughing at the successful test. The images show the missiles were land-based cruise missiles believed to be capable to carrying nuclear warheads. According to the Yonhap news agency, the rockets flew around 280 miles with an altitude of 37m, officials said. This came after Kim's regime fired another short-ranged missile on Sunday. Dictator Kim had not launched any missiles since April last year and the new tests are reportedly a reaction to joint military drills conducted by the US and South Korea last week. Based on the distance travelled and flight time, the rockets appear to be similar to the Russian missile called the Iskander. Known in North Korea as the KN-23, the … [Read more...] about North Korean generals laugh as Kim Jong-un launches a nuke-ready ballistic missile in a terrifying military test

Ibori, Obasanjo, Ribadu: Anatomy of corruption in Nigeria

· March 27, 2021 ·

Kindly Share This Story: By Tony Eluemunor Last Saturday provided a peek into the anatomy of corruption in Nigeria between 1999 and 2007. Corrupt practices were of epic dimensions and the practitioners were audacious despite President Olusegun Obasanjo and EFCC chairman, Nuhu Ribadu’s advertised anti-graft stance. Scandalised readers asked what happened to Pentascope after it had ruined NITEL/M-Tel. Answer: Its contract was terminated February 2005, after 20 months; it had paid itself $7, 600, 000 instead of $5, 500, 000; an over-payment of  $2,050,000. Then TRANSCORP Plc purchased 51% of NITEL/M-Tel for $500m but the late President Umaru Yar’Adua administration revoked that deal. Pre-Pentascope NITEL-Mtel earned N1bn monthly and SAT-3 (Satellite arm) raked in N259m.  A Senate Committee report said that TRANSCORP took over NITEL in Obasanjo’s time with a syndicated loan from UBA, Union, Skye, Wema and Intercontinental banks on  November 14, 2006, … [Read more...] about Ibori, Obasanjo, Ribadu: Anatomy of corruption in Nigeria

Will Roblox’s thriving virtual economy make it the next meme stock?

· March 23, 2021 ·

One portent of a meme stock being born is when the company gets a pseudo-ticker on WallStreetBets , an online forum on Reddit. Roblox, an American video-game platform, has earned the tag $sears. But Redditors aren’t mixing it up with a stodgy old department store. Roblox’s digital currency, Robux, sounds like Roebuck, of Sears Roebuck fame. Get it? Roblox ticks other meme-stock boxes, too. The kids are into it, just as they were into GameStop , an ailing bricks-and-mortar gaming retailer whose share price has soared this year. Unlike GameStop, however, Roblox is all the rage with venture capitalists, Wall Street bankers and other supposedly hard-headed types. The firm’s private valuation soared from US$4b at the start of 2020 to US$29.5b in January, when it raised US$520m. It is so flush with cash that it has decided to go public on the New York Stock Exchange via a direct listing, without drumming up fresh capital.
