Trump picks conservative Kavanaugh as US Supreme Court nominee

· July 10, 2018 ·

WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump on Monday (Jul 9) announced Brett Kavanaugh as his nominee for the US Supreme Court, picking a conservative federal appeals court judge who survived a previous tough Senate confirmation battle and helped investigate Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. Trump, with the unique opportunity to make two lifetime appointments to the nation's highest judicial body in his first 18 months as president, selected Kavanaugh, 53, to replace long-serving conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81. Kavanaugh was picked by former president George Bush to serve on the influential Washington-based appeals court in 2003. Contentious confirmation hearings in the Senate delayed his confirmation until 2006. Prior to his appointment, Kavanaugh worked as a lawyer in the White House under Bush. Some conservatives activists have criticised Kavanaugh for his ties to the Bush family and some of his rulings, … [Read more...] about Trump picks conservative Kavanaugh as US Supreme Court nominee

Supreme Court says favours controls on video streaming services

· March 4, 2021 ·

NEW DELHI: India's top court on Thursday said it favoured a screening mechanism for online video streaming services, dominated in the country by Amazon and Netflix and which currently are aired freely. The U.S. streaming platforms have faced complaints from lawmakers belonging to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party and others that some of the shows promote obscenity or offend religious beliefs. "We are of the view there should be some screening of these types (of content). What they are showing? They are showing pornography also," Supreme Court Justice Ashok Bhushan said. Traditional film viewing in India, home to the thriving Bollywood industry, has changed as fewer people go to cinema halls and web series have become common, Bhushan said. The remarks came as the Supreme Court heard a plea from Amazon's head of India content for Prime Video, Aparna Purohit, for protection against arrest in a case involving a controversial political drama "Tandav", a … [Read more...] about Supreme Court says favours controls on video streaming services

Brazil Supreme Court blocks extradition of Italian leftist ex-guerrilla Battisti

· October 14, 2017 ·

BRASILIA: A Supreme Court injunction on Friday temporarily blocked the extradition of Cesare Battisti, an Italian left-wing former guerrilla convicted of murder in his country. The decision by Justice Luiz Fux prevents the Brazilian government from extraditing Battisti until the full court can rule on habeas corpus request from Battisti's lawyers, a ruling that is expected within two weeks. The former guerrilla was briefly arrested this month when trying to leave the country. Battisti faces life in prison in Italy, where he was convicted of four murders committed in the 1970s, when he belonged to a guerrilla group called Armed Proletarians for Communism. He escaped from prison in 1981 and lived in France before fleeing to Brazil to avoid being extradited to Italy. Brazil's Supreme Court authorized Battisti's extradition in 2009, but he was not sent back to Italy because former leftist President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva granted him refugee status on his last day in office in … [Read more...] about Brazil Supreme Court blocks extradition of Italian leftist ex-guerrilla Battisti

Plea in Supreme Court seeks appointment of regular CBI Director through high-power panel

· March 4, 2021 ·

A writ petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the appointment of a regular CBI Director through the high-power selection committee of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India and the Leader of the Opposition. “The government has failed to appoint the Director of the CBI as per Section 4A of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act of 1946 on the expiry of the term of the last incumbent, Rishi Kumar Shukla, on February 2, 2021,” NGO Common Cause, represented by advocate Prashant Bhushan, said. The petition pointed out that instead of a regular appointment to the top CBI post, the government appointed Praveen Sinha on February 3 as an “interim/acting CBI Director.” The petition said such an interim appointment through an executive order was not envisaged in the statutory scheme of the 1946 Act. The CBI Director is a sensitive post. The Director is the final authority in the organisation in several sensitive investigations. The premier investigative agency … [Read more...] about Plea in Supreme Court seeks appointment of regular CBI Director through high-power panel
