Julian Edelman Announces Retirement From Football

By Michael Hurley , CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Julian Edelman is hanging up his spikes. The veteran wide receiver officially announced his decision in a four-minute video posted on his social media channels on Monday afternoon. “Nothing in my career has ever come easy. And no surprise, this isn’t gonna be easy, either. Now I’ve always said, I’ma go until the wheels come off. And uh … they finally have fallen off,” Edelman said while seated on the middle of the field at Gillette Stadium. “Due to an injury last year, I’ll be making my official announcement of my retirement from football. It was a hard decision, but the right decision for me and my family. By Michael Hurley , CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — For whatever reason, the internet loves to fight about whether Julian Edelman belongs in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It is absolutely wild stuff. Anyways, the argument against Edelman is no doubt a big one. He’s not a prototypical wide receiver, so he doesn’t have prototypical wide receiver stats. Likewise, he never got any prototypical wide receiver accolades, like Pro Bowl nods or All-Pro votes. So, the logic goes, if he’s not worthy of being a First or Second Team All-Pro, and if he can’t even make a stinking Pro Bowl, then how on earth could you ever put him in the Hall of Fame? Shortly after news broke that the Patriots had released Edelman after he failed a physical related to last year’s knee injury, Edelman announced that he has played the last game of his career. “Nothing in my career has ever come easy,” Edelman said. “This isn’t going to be easy either. I’ve always said I’m going until the wheels come off and they finally have fallen off. Due to an injury last year I will be making my official announcement of my retirement from football. It was a hard decision but the right decision for me and my family.
