NEW YORK: After more than 100 days of lockdown, New York City residents on Monday (Jun 22) celebrated their progress in curbing the coronavirus pandemic by getting their first haircuts in months, shopping at long-closed stores and dining at outdoor cafes. Once the epicentre of the global outbreak, New York City was the last region in the state to move into the second phase of reopening with restaurants and bars offering outdoor service and many shops reopening. Barber shops and hair salons welcomed customers for the first time since mid-March. Playgrounds were also due to reopen on Monday in the most populous city in the United States. The pandemic has killed nearly 120,000 Americans and is flaring up in a dozen states that reported record increases in cases last week. 13 deaths in a day: An ‘apocalyptic’ coronavirus surge at a New York hospital
NEW YORK: In several hours on Tuesday, Dr Ashley Bray performed chest compressions at Elmhurst Hospital Center on a woman in her 80s, a man in his 60s and a 38-year-old who reminded the doctor of her fiance. All had tested positive for the coronavirus and had gone into cardiac arrest. All eventually died. Elmhurst, a 545-bed public hospital in Queens, has begun transferring patients not suffering from coronavirus to other facilities as it moves toward becoming one dedicated entirely to the outbreak. Doctors and nurses have struggled to make do with a few dozen ventilators. Calls over a loudspeaker of “Team 700”, the code for when a patient is on the verge of death, come several times a shift. Some have died inside the emergency room while waiting for a bed. A refrigerated truck has been stationed outside to hold the bodies of the dead. Over the past 24 hours, New York City’s public hospital system said in a statement, 13 people at Elmhurst had died. “It’s apocalyptic,” said … [Read more...] about 13 deaths in a day: An ‘apocalyptic’ coronavirus surge at a New York hospital

US schools lay off hundreds of thousands, setting up lasting harm to kids
SAN DIEGO: Late last month, San Diego high school teacher Jessica Macias put aside her worries about her future, psyched herself up and launched into an enthusiastic lesson via video feed to her class on the theory of knowledge. Macias, a 26-year-old English teacher, had attended Castle Park High School herself as a student. While delivering that lecture, she said, she was “pushing to the back of my head” that she’d soon be unemployed. Macias, along with 204 other teachers in San Diego’s Sweetwater Union High School District, will lose her job when the school year ends Jun 5. The night before the class, she said in an interview, “I couldn’t sleep because I was thinking about not having a job.” Macias will join the staggering number of public school personnel across the United States who have lost their jobs in the wake of school closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In April alone, 469,000 public school district personnel nationally lost their jobs, including kindergarten … [Read more...] about US schools lay off hundreds of thousands, setting up lasting harm to kids
Four Democrat Governors Issued Similar Nursing Home Policies to Andrew Cuomo’s
Four Democrat governors enacted similar nursing home policies as Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) did in 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic. The governors of Michigan, California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania approved similar policies as fears grew that new patients would overwhelm hospitals. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) issued an order that a long-term care facility “must not prohibit admission or readmission of a resident based on COVID-19 [coronavirus] testing requirements or results.” The policy was renewed three times before being rescinded in July 2020. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s (D-CA) administration ordered on April 10, 2020, that “patients hospitalized, or receiving treatment at an alternate care site, with COVID-19 can be discharged to a [skilled nursing facility] when clinically indicated.” Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ) approved a directive from state Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli that said no patient could be denied admission or readmission to a nursing … [Read more...] about Four Democrat Governors Issued Similar Nursing Home Policies to Andrew Cuomo’s
