World T20 organisers hopeful despite potential clash with other sports
MELBOURNE: Organisers expect this year's Twenty20 World Cup to be a success even if it has to vie with Australian rules football and rugby league for viewers due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the head of the organising committee said on Sunday. The Oct. 18-Nov. 15 tournament was slotted into Australia's sports calendar between the end of the football season and the beginning of summer cricket to draw maximum attention. With both the Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (AFL) seasons suspended due to the pandemic, they may now clash with the Twenty20 World Cup when they resume. "In the event they have extended seasons...we still think the World Cup is a really strong proposition that might not come here again for 10 or 20 years," Nick Hockley, CEO of the organising committee, told Australian Associated Press (AAP). "People love a World Cup. Cricket is Australia's national sport ... and T20 is the format that appeals to the broadest possible demographic," he … [Read more...] about World T20 organisers hopeful despite potential clash with other sports
Olympics: Tokyo 2020 organisers to raise ratio of women on its board to 42%
TOKYO: The Tokyo 2020 organising committee said on Tuesday (Mar 2) it would add 12 new women to its board, more than doubling the ratio of women to 42 per cent, after its former president, Yoshiro Mori, stepped down last month over sexist remarks. Organising committee chief executive Toshiro Muto told a news conference that the new members will be unveiled after official approval on Wednesday, but added that they had looked for athletes and gender equality specialists, among others. Mori, a former prime minister, resigned as Tokyo 2020 president after sparking a furore when he said during a Japanese Olympic Committee meeting in February that women talk too much. With the Tokyo Olympics less than five months away, the organisers need to move quickly to regain public trust, Seiko Hashimoto, who replaced Mori, told a committee board meeting earlier in the day. "As for promoting gender equality, I believe we need to tackle the issue with a sense of speed and get results firmly to … [Read more...] about Olympics: Tokyo 2020 organisers to raise ratio of women on its board to 42%
South Korea, Japan must look to future to improve ties: Moon Jae-in
South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on Monday that his government is eager for talks with Japan to improve relations following years of bitter feuding over historical grievances, adding that those unresolved issues should not stand in the way of developing “future-oriented” ties. “There have been times where issues of the past weren’t separated from those of the future and became intermingled with each other. This has impeded forward-looking development,” Mr. Moon said in a nationally televised speech commemorating the anniversary of a 1919 Korean uprising against Japanese colonial rule. “The Korean government is always ready to sit down and have talks with the Japanese government,” he said. South Korea and Japan have been struggling to repair relations that sank to their lowest point in decades in 2019 following South Korean court rulings that ordered Japanese companies to pay reparations to Koreans who were forced to work in their factories during World War II. Those … [Read more...] about South Korea, Japan must look to future to improve ties: Moon Jae-in
