Punk music has always been about individuality. Although skinheads and fascists have periodically tried to co-opt and homogenize the genre over its 50-year history, they have always failed, because the true spirit of punk begins with an original thought, a unique life story, and the poetic philosophies that truth is beauty and that the pomp and artifice of pop music are a distraction from expressing something deeper. At its core, punk is the people’s rock & roll. Perhaps that’s one reason why the genre appeals more broadly than some other styles of rock to people from every background, and why there have been strong black voices in the genre almost from the beginning, whether it was drummer D.H. Peligro railing against Reagan with the Dead Kennedys or guitarist Rocky George sending up blind capitalism on Suicidal Tendencies’ “Join the Army.” Anyone can play punk, and everyone is welcome, so why not just do it? Here is a decades-spanning selection of 15 bold songs by vital black … [Read more...] about Music at Home: 15 Great Punk Songs by Black Artists

The Beach Boys ‘ Mike Love unveiled a sprightly new song, “Unleash the Love,” the title track from his upcoming double LP, out November 17th via BMG. The rollicking tune boasts a busy but soulful arrangement filled with organ, piano, horns, acoustic guitar and plenty of back-up vocals and harmonies. Love’s lyrics carry a simple yet endearing message – “It’s in our power to change this planet’s destiny/ If we unleash the love” – and the musician even interpolates the Youngbloods’ famed “Come on people now” refrain from “Get Together.” “Unleash the Love” is one of 13 new songs Love wrote for his double-LP, which will also feature re-workings of 12 classic Beach Boys tunes, such as “California Girls,” “Help Me Rhonda” and “Good Vibrations.” Michael Lloyd produced the album, while Love also enlisted a slew of guests, including John Stamos, who plays drums on two originals. The actor also appears alongside Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath for a version of the Beach Boys’ “Do It Again,” … [Read more...] about Hear Mike Love’s Joyful New Song ‘Unleash the Love’
Heart ’s Ann Wilson has released a booming new solo single, “The Hammer.” The track is a classic blast of big riff hard rock that’s all headbang and no nonsense, save for a clever organ-led bridge to offer a brief, ethereal respite. “When the hammer comes down,” Wilson bellows, “Binding, binding/Saying again what’s been a million times said/Bury your truth and suffocate your head.” Wilson wrote “The Hammer” with guitarists Tyler Boley and Craig Bartock, and recorded the song last fall in Seattle. “We had a great time recording this one!” Wilson said in a statement. “The whole experience was great! The band felt just as passionate as the lyrics!” “The Hammer” marks Wilson’s second single of 2021, following “Tender Heart,” which she released in January. Last year, one week before the 2020 election, Wilson released a cover of Steve Earle’s “The Revolution Starts Now.” Back in November, Wilson also revealed that a Heart biopic was in the works, with Carrie Brownstein … [Read more...] about Heart’s Ann Wilson Brings Down ‘The Hammer’ on New Song
