‘ESOPs to independent directors in long-term interest of a company’

· March 3, 2021 ·

Q: How would you read SEBI ’s new proposals for independent directors? Hiroo Mirchandani: My initial response to SEBI’s new proposals for independent directors is very positive. The consultation paper seems to institutionalise some of the best practices of corporate governance followed by well-governed companies. Shriram Subramanian: The role of IDs needed to be strengthened and these proposals go a long way in that direction. In many companies, IDs are former employees or employees of other group companies, which means that many IDs are not “truly independent”. Q: Do you think the dual voting proposal will empower minority shareholders? Hiroo Mirchandani: I would say this gives a greater say to minority shareholders. It also raises the responsibility of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee to select appropriate IDs who will pass the dual approval process. This will empower minority shareholders and enhance the “independence” of independent directors. … [Read more...] about ‘ESOPs to independent directors in long-term interest of a company’

Olympics: Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori resigns over sexism row, but successor unclear

· February 12, 2021 ·

TOKYO (AFP, REUTERS) - Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori bowed to mounting pressure and resigned Friday (Feb 12) over sexist remarks, but his replacement was not immediately clear after opposition emerged to his favoured successor. The resignation and the leadership vacuum left behind by the controversy add to the woes of organisers struggling to win over a sceptical public less than six months before the virus-delayed Games. Mori, 83, sparked domestic and international outrage by claiming last week that women speak too much in meetings, with officials, sports stars and Olympic sponsors slamming the remarks as inappropriate. On Friday, he announced he would step down, effective immediately. "My inappropriate statement has caused a lot of chaos. I would like to express my sincere apologies," he told a meeting of Tokyo 2020's executive board and council called to discuss his remarks. "I wish to resign as the president as of today," he added. "What is important is to … [Read more...] about Olympics: Tokyo 2020 chief Yoshiro Mori resigns over sexism row, but successor unclear

Olympics: Tokyo ‘unwavering’ on Summer Games but fans not guaranteed: CEO

· January 20, 2021 ·

TOKYO (AFP) - Olympics organisers are "unwavering" on the prospect of holding the coronavirus-delayed Games this year but cannot rule out staging the quadrennial event without spectators, Tokyo 2020 chief executive officer Toshiro Muto has told AFP. In an interview ahead of the Games' six-month countdown, he conceded people are "anxious" as virus cases soar worldwide, including in Japan where Tokyo is under a state of emergency. But he insisted the Olympics were still possible, even without requiring athletes and fans to be vaccinated, and that public opinion will swing behind the Games once the virus situation improves. "We are not discussing cancellation," he said on Tuesday (Jan 20). "Holding the Games is our unwavering policy, and at this point in time we're not discussing anything other than that." The spectre of cancellation has returned to haunt the Games 10 months after the pandemic forced the first peacetime postponement in Olympic history. Polling in Japan this … [Read more...] about Olympics: Tokyo ‘unwavering’ on Summer Games but fans not guaranteed: CEO

Samsung updates Odyssey G9 gaming monitor with Quantum mini-LED tech

· March 2, 2021 ·

After launching its ultra-premium Odyssey G9 monitor with a massive 49-inch curved screen and “dual QHD” resolution in 2020, Samsung is ready to give the panel a major upgrade this year. While retaining the futuristic Tron-like design aesthetics featuring a white back panel and glowing blue ring on the rear, the 2021 version of the Odyssey G9 adds in Quantum mini-LED backlighting. Borrowed from its television range, the mini-LED technology gives this year’s Odyssey G9 better contrast and brightness, two important elements to gamers. Samsung claims that it’s bringing both Quantum mini-LED enhancements and Quantum Matrix Technology to the Odyssey for the first time. Combined with an immersive 1000R curvature, the Odyssey G9 should be an eye-catching screen for immersive gameplay, ensuring you can surround yourself and not miss any important action. Last year’s Odyssey G9 supported both AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync screen technology, and we expect this year’s upgraded model to … [Read more...] about Samsung updates Odyssey G9 gaming monitor with Quantum mini-LED tech

‘Am I your fire?’: Japan’s rugby players say Backstreet Boys their pre-match jam

· September 25, 2019 ·

TOKYO: Japan's rugby players are looking to an unusual source for inspiration as the World Cup hosts chase a historic quarter-final spot - the Backstreet Boys. Asked if there was a go-to song the players were using to fire themselves up before matches, full-back Ryohei Yamanaka said: "Yes, Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way." Japan, hitherto tournament whipping boys, have become potential giant-killers since toppling two-time champions South Africa in their opening game four years ago in the first of three World Cup victories under Eddie Jones. The Brave Blossoms, who have become an almost permanent fixture in the world's top 10 since that 2015 tournament, beat Russia 30-10 in their Pool A opener last Friday. As Jamie Joseph's troops prepare to take on Ireland in their second game in Shizuoka on Saturday, the Japanese players will once again be warming up to Backstreet Boys lyrics such as "Am I your fire? Your one desire" before going into battle. Japan will likely need … [Read more...] about ‘Am I your fire?’: Japan’s rugby players say Backstreet Boys their pre-match jam
