Over 220,000 Britons have signed a petition against the introduction of coronavirus vaccine passports, potentially forcing Parliament to publicly debate the merits of such a scheme. The petition warns that vaccine passports would limit the rights of people who haven’t or can’t have, or refused a Covid-19 vaccine. Such government-enabled discrimination would be “unacceptable”, those behind the claim said. At the time of publication, the petition had attracted 222,000 signatures. The petitioners demanded, therefore, that the government commits “to not rolling out any e-vaccination status/immunity passport to the British public.” Westminster Hall debates on public petitions had been suspended during the lockdown, supposedly to help Members of Parliament social distance. That was reversed this week, however, as Parliament voted Thursday to restore the process for the first time in months. Under the terms of the government’s petition system, 10,000 signatures earns a response on … [Read more...] about 220,000 Brits Sign Petition Against Vaccine Passports, Forcing Debate in Parliament

Tom Hanks saddles up for his first Western film in News Of The World
It's taken Tom Hanks more than 35 years to make his first Western so when he finally got on a horse and into a shootout, he wanted to make sure the movie had something special to say. Hanks, known for playing nice guys, stars in News Of The World, out in Singapore on Jan 7. He joked that he likes to think of the film as "The Mandalorian, without light sabers". "There's no reason to make a Western just because you get to wear comfortable clothes and a hat. It has to be about something bigger than just the genre," Hanks said. Set after the US Civil War, the film follows Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks) as he travels across a divided America reading the news in small towns. He meets up with a traumatised girl, played by newcomer Helena Zengel, who was taken by the Native American Kiowa tribe years ago and decides to deliver her back to her surviving relatives. For Hanks and director Paul Greengrass, News Of The World is about the power of healing after fractious events. … [Read more...] about Tom Hanks saddles up for his first Western film in News Of The World
Miss flying? These watches inspired by the world’s great pilots are the next best thing
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives in many ways. Out of the many things that we miss, ranking high on that list is the ability to hop on board a plane and take off on an adventure. In a new release, Swiss watch brand Longines seeks to capture the spirit of flying with a nostalgic collection of classic aviation watches, in a time when most of us have found ourselves grounded for most of the year. As its famous winged hourglass logo suggests, aviation has played an important role in the history of Longines. Since the brand’s inception in 1832, Longines has equipped some of the most legendary adventurers with its precision tool watches. Amelia Earhart wore a Longines chronograph in 1932 for her 14-hour, 56-minute non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean – the first female aviator to do so. Howard Hughes set a round the world flight record of three days, 19 hours and 14 minutes in 1938. He used Longines for timekeeping and navigation. Similarly, in 1931, Elinor … [Read more...] about Miss flying? These watches inspired by the world’s great pilots are the next best thing
New Year’s Resolutions 2021
A 300g Milka Choco & Biscuit. That was my go-to lunch more often than I like to admit. Even though it seems like a lifetime ago, I remember it like it was yesterday: coming home from a long day, tired, exhausted and hungry. And 300g Choco & Biscuit was a reliable messenger of heaven on earth. At least for the 20 minutes or so it took my hypothalamus to stop ringing the hunger bells. What I felt then was not so heavenly. I had entertained this bad habit for far too long and was determined to break with it. The new year was the perfect time! It was the beginning of a new millennium and with that came a new me. Although 2001 was not too bad for a new start, either. And then 2002. My New Year’s resolutions were a disaster. And I have no problems admitting that, because so are yours. Source: Carlos @folkcarlos/Unsplash According to a study from YouGov, nearly 80% of respondents who made some New Year’s resolutions for 2020 failed to achieve at least some of … [Read more...] about New Year’s Resolutions 2021
Personal Boundaries: Privacy and Personal Space in Pandemic
Source: Emily Parrish, used with permission. As the pandemic wears on are you feeling less motivated and more depressed? More anxious ? Out of control? From a psychological standpoint, it’s not surprising. As a lengthy, unpredictable and uncontrollable stressor, the pandemic steals our feelings of personal control where it hurts—our jobs, relationships, finances, education , health, recreation and travel. And that’s not the only theft of our personal control that makes things feel out of control. The pandemic also steals three of the most basic forms of personal boundary control: Control over the space around our body ( personal space ) · Control over who we have contact with and when (privacy) Control over the physical spaces that serve a central function in our daily lives (territoriality). To feel in control of our lives, we need to control these basic boundaries. Personal space is the invisible boundary we claim around our bodies. We space ourselves from … [Read more...] about Personal Boundaries: Privacy and Personal Space in Pandemic
