Geico must face lawsuit claiming it overcharged on car insurance during pandemic -judge

· March 6, 2021 ·

The auto insurer Geico Corp, a unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc, must face a proposed class action claiming it overcharged policyholders as the coronavirus pandemic led to less driving and fewer accidents, a judge has ruled. In a decision on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman in Chicago said Illinois drivers may try to prove Geico violated a state consumer fraud law by unfairly and deceptively marketing its "Geico Giveback" discount program. She dismissed breach of contract and unjust enrichment claims. Neither Geico nor its lawyers immediately responded to requests for comment on Friday. Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to similar requests. Geico had last April offered policyholders $2.5 billion of credits, including 15% on renewals from April to October, averaging about $150 per policy. But policyholders led by Briana Siegal said this induced them to renew and pay excessive premiums rather than shop around, as … [Read more...] about Geico must face lawsuit claiming it overcharged on car insurance during pandemic -judge

Colorado law enforcement joining forces to crack down on unemployment insurance fraud

· March 4, 2021 ·

The Colorado attorney general, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and district attorneys from across the state are teaming up to halt and prosecute a massive surge in identity theft cases related to the state’s unemployment insurance program. “We need to go after these scammers. This activity is criminal, it is reprehensible and we will do all we can to find the people practicing it and bring them to justice,” said Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser on a joint press call Thursday announcing the creation of the Colorado Unemployment Fraud Task Force. The state labor department has flagged about 1.1 million unemployment claims as fraudulent since the pandemic began, a count that surpasses the number of legitimate claims made in the state, executive director Joe Barela, said. Prior to the pandemic, in 2019, the state investigated about 90 suspected cases of unemployment insurance fraud. Potential losses of around $7.5 billion … [Read more...] about Colorado law enforcement joining forces to crack down on unemployment insurance fraud

Last man called by one of the murdered ‘Essex Boys’ was never questioned by police

· March 5, 2021 ·

The last man called by one of three gangsters murdered in the 1995 “Essex Boys” killings was never questioned by police, it has emerged. Retired detective David McKelvey says the suspected villain was linked to a man who has previously been named as the shooter, but was never charged. Instead Jack Whomes and Michael Steele were jailed for life after being convicted of blasting the drug dealers with a shotgun in their Range Rover 26 years ago. But Mr McKelvey, and his team of highly experienced former murder detectives, now claim to have found evidence supporting the account of an East End crook who told police he was the getaway driver for the real killer. Mr McKelvey, who runs private investigation firm TM-Eye, said: “We have done a thorough and detailed investigation which has led us to believe there may have been a miscarriage of justice. “Compelling new evidence throws the case into doubt and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward.” The bodies of Pat Tate, 36, … [Read more...] about Last man called by one of the murdered ‘Essex Boys’ was never questioned by police

Unemployment benefits and taxes: Here’s what to do about incorrect tax forms and other issues

· March 4, 2021 ·

With unemployment insurance fraud running rampant, thousands of Coloradans are receiving federal tax forms showing they received unemployment compensation even though they never filed a claim. Let’s face it, no one wants to find themselves crosswise with the Internal Revenue Service. The bottom line is you do not owe money on income you never received, although a false form could cause some mild headaches. Here’s a Q&A on what to do: What documents should I expect to receive if I claimed unemployment benefits in 2020? You should receive an IRS form 1099-G, which lists the amount of unemployment insurance paid during the year and how much in taxes was collected. The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment mailed some 1099-G forms with incorrect taxpayer-identification numbers but corrected forms have been mailed. If you did not receive a corrected copy, a form should be available on your MyUI+ account. What if I received a 1099-G, but I didn’t claim unemployment … [Read more...] about Unemployment benefits and taxes: Here’s what to do about incorrect tax forms and other issues
