Bangkok breathes cleaner air during COVID-19 pandemic and experts want it to last

· April 28, 2020 ·

BANGKOK: Analysis of air quality in Bangkok since the Thai government began enforcing strict social isolation measures has found significant drop in dangerous pollution levels of more than 20 per cent, as compared with the same time last year. The average levels of PM2.5 - tiny atmospheric particulate matter mostly produced by vehicles, refineries and other heavy industries - were reduced by 22 per cent in roadside areas of the capital, and 15 per cent in air monitoring stations in general areas between Mar 15 and Apr 10. The amount of PM10, typically caused by agriculture, construction and smoke, is also significantly down and carbon monoxide has been almost slashed in half, according to the analysis of government data by one of the country’s leading air quality experts, Dr Supat Wangwongwatana, the former director general of Thailand's Pollution Control Department. “Now, the air quality is very, very good. In some areas, the air quality is even within the World Health … [Read more...] about Bangkok breathes cleaner air during COVID-19 pandemic and experts want it to last

China extends pollution clampdown, warns COVID-19 makes meeting targets tougher

· May 22, 2020 ·

BEIJING: China said on Friday (May 22) it will continue to strengthen anti-pollution controls and meet its environmental targets for 2020, but warned that the coronavirus pandemic would weigh on energy intensity goals. "By maintaining the same direction and intensity of effort, we will address (the) problem at the source, (and) bring about sustained improvement in the environment," the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement. Earlier this month, China's environment ministry had said the improvement in air quality in the first quarter of this year was "incomparable", as restrictions imposed to contain the COVID-19 outbreak meant the closure of industrial plants and reduced travel. But China's air pollution saw an increase in April for the first time since December 2019, with analysts attributing the rebound to the resumption of economic activity. Commentary: The strange, lovely sight of clear skies in India amid COVID-19 gloom

· April 24, 2020 ·

CANBERRA: Almost immediately after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced there would be an almost month-long lockdown across the country from Mar 24 to help stymie the spread of COVID-19, the clouds started to clear. For the first time in years, residents of New Delhi – usually ranking in the top five most polluted cities in the world – woke up to blue skies over the city, rather than its usual murky toxic pea soup. Instead of the usual traffic noise and endless tooting of horns, people could hear birds from their inner-city balconies: Bulbuls, kites, and, at dusk, even peacocks. Millions of cars on the roads, combined with belching exhaust fumes from manufacturing facilities, added to the haze from burning crop stubble – all this has meant air quality in Indian cities is off-the-charts awful. Biden should use private partnerships to save US lands

· March 1, 2021 ·

Conserving land is an essential element of any effort to battle climate change, a fact highlighted by the 30x30 plan supported by President Biden Joe Biden Biden offers support to union organizing efforts Senate Democrats nix 'Plan B' on minimum wage hike Kavanaugh dismays conservatives by dodging pro-Trump election lawsuits MORE . Fulfilling a campaign pledge, one of Biden’s first actions as president was to sign an executive order that established the goal of conserving a third of America’s land and ocean waters by 2030. Meeting that goal will not be easy, but it can be achieved if we harness both private and government resources and ensure more Americans can participate in land conservation efforts. The good news is that ocean conservation is already within reach of this threshold, with 26 percent of U.S. waters already protected . We have significantly more work to do when it comes to land, with only 12 percent conserved. ADVERTISEMENT The … [Read more...] about Biden should use private partnerships to save US lands
