Hotels and tourist attractions in Chonburi must close, according to an official order from the province’s communicable disease committee. Hotel and other businesses related to the tourism industry, who struggled due to the provincial travel restrictions, actually requested the order so employees could get unemployment benefits. With the official closure order, the employees can receive 3 month compensations from the government. The new wave of Covid-19 infections hit businesses in Chon Buri even worse than the first outbreak, which peaked in April, according to acting president of the province’s tourism council, Tanate Supara-sahasrangsri. During the first wave, a strict lockdown was imposed and all hotels were ordered to close. Relief measures supported the affected employees. Chiang Mai hotels slash prices amid ongoing slump in tourism
Hotels in the northern province of Chiang Mai have been forced to cut their rates by up to 90%, in a desperate bid to attract more domestic tourists. According to a Bangkok Post report, La-Iad Bungsrithong, from the northern chapter of the Thai Hotels Association, says with tourists mainly favouring the southern beach destinations this month, hotel operators in the north of the country are preparing for the forthcoming low season. The resurgence of Covid-19 late last year meant that in December, only 1,000 Chiang Mai hotels, offering between 20,000 and 30,000 rooms, stayed open. This month, occupancy rates have plummeted to less than 3% and are not expected to rise beyond 5% during the Songkran holiday next month. La-Iad says traditional target markets such as China are currently off-limits due to the Chinese government placing restrictions on citizens travelling out of the country. “Even though vaccine distribution has started globally, the target markets for Chiang Mai such as … [Read more...] about Chiang Mai hotels slash prices amid ongoing slump in tourism
Cambodia turns hotel into hospital as COVID-19 cases rise
PHNOM PENH: A defunct luxury hotel in Cambodia's capital finished conversion into a 500-room coronavirus hospital on Monday (Mar 8), as authorities enforced a new law imposing criminal punishments for violating health rules and infections continued to rise in the Southeast Asian country. The Great Duke Phnom Penh has not been in operation for two years, and is now set up to treat virus patients amid a third wave of the pandemic in Cambodia. Prime Minister Hun Sen assigned General Hun Manet, his eldest son and a powerful army chief, to lead the two-day effort to turn the hotel into a temporary hospital. The property is currently owned by a Chinese businessman who renamed it after purchasing it from a Cambodian tycoon. It is unclear why the upscale hotel has since been closed. Located in central Phnom Penh and apparently in good condition, the hotel was well known in the 2000s and was a popular spot for foreign embassies, NGOs and other groups during government-hosted … [Read more...] about Cambodia turns hotel into hospital as COVID-19 cases rise

While the company, whose employees include National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) veterans, initially projected to begin construction in 2025, they had to delay said plans due to the pandemic, as per The Washington Post on March 3. “It’s going to happen fast when it starts,” Orbital Assembly chief executive John Blincow was quoted as saying, noting that it would take only a year or two to assemble the hotel. “And we believe it’s going to happen a lot, too, even before we finish the first one. We have buyers for other stations because they’re very, very lucrative,” he added.
