A Conversation With Rebecca Onie, CEO of Health Leads

As a sophomore at Harvard, Rebecca Onie was already revolutionizing Boston's health care system by co-founding Project HEALTH, now called Health Leads, at Boston Medical Center. Fifteen years later, as Health Leads's CEO, she's breaking the link between poor health and poverty by mobilizing an energetic yet unusual group of health workers: ambitious college students. Her organization, which today serves six cities, teaches student volunteers to help low-income patients fill social "prescriptions" such as better food, housing, and job training. Onie also received a degree from Harvard Law and worked briefly as an attorney in Chicago. Since returning to Health Leads in 2006, she has been honored as one of TIME magazine's 100 most influential people, a MacArthur Fellow, and a member of O, the Oprah Magazine's "Power List" of women who are "changing the world for the better." Ihedioha inherited poor health facilities ― Dr Acholonu

By Chidi Nkwopara, Owerri Underfunding, inadequate personnel, lack of essential modern medical equipment and other infrastructural needs, have been identified as the major handicaps bedevilling Imo State Government-owned hospitals. The Chairman of Imo State Hospital Management Board, Dr. Douglas Acholonu, made this known after inspecting some of the medical outfits yesterday. At the time of going to press, the inspection team had visited Awo-Omamma General Hospital, Oru East local council area, Amaifeke Health Centre, Orlu local government area and Nwaorieubi General Hospital in Mbaitoli Local Government Areas. While saying that “the essence of the inspection was to identify the facilities in bad condition and find ways to revamping them for optimal function and use”, Dr. Acholonu however, reiterated the commitment of Governor Emeka Ihedioha to improving the health sector and ensuring service delivery in the state. A US health insurance giant is using an AI system to monitor whether patients with chronic diseases are skipping their medication.   Cigna's technology, Health Connect 360, will be rolled out to millions of Americans next month.  But experts fear the technology will be used to cancel policies or avoid paying up if patients are found to be missing or incorrectly taking prescriptions. Doctors and nurses will be able to constantly keep an eye on patients' health and step in when they have cause for concern.  For example, an alert may be triggered if patients forget to pick up their prescription or miss an appointment.
