Microsoft has released a new Kids Mode for its popular Edge browser that allows children to discover the web in a fun way while limiting their access to only approved sites. Aimed at pre-teens, Kids Mode can be accessed via the profile button in the toolbar, although it doesn't require a child account or a profile to use. It offers options for age ranges 5-8 and 9-12 years old. Both ranges provide the highest level of tracking protection and use Bing's SafeSearch to filter out adult content from searches, but the 9-12 range adds a news feed to the tab with curated articles from MSN for Kids that includes subjects like science, fun facts, and animals. Microsoft includes 70 popular kids' sites in its built-in whitelist, and parents and guardians can add more sites if they choose. If a kid tries to navigate to a site outside of that allowed list, they’ll be greeted with a friendly block page, encouraging them to either ask for permission or try navigating elsewhere. Microsoft is launching a new Kids Mode for its Edge browser today. It’s built directly into Microsoft Edge on Windows and macOS as a free option that’s simple to enable and doesn’t require much work for parents to manage. The mode can be enabled by selecting it from the Edge profile option, and it will lock kids into the Edge browser with access only to approved sites. “It’s a free, protected online environment for kids 12 and under that gives parents peace of mind when their kids browse the web on a shared device,” explains Divya Kumar, product director of Microsoft Edge, in an interview with The Verge . Microsoft really designed this Kids Mode around the scenario where parents might hand a laptop over to a child to let them browse the web. Once you trigger Kids Mode, there’s an option to select between five to eight years or nine to 12 years. Both age ranges include the highest level of tracking prevention in Edge and strict Bing SafeSearch to filter out adult text, images, and … [Read more...] about Microsoft Edge’s new Kids Mode is ideal for shared family PCs
Microsoft is making a version of its new Edge browser -- one which shares the same core as new Edge on PCs -- available to testers in the Canary channel on Android. WebKit rendering engine and on Android it uses Blink . (I don't know if Microsoft's plans include replacing the rendering engine on Android. I don't think they are allowed by Apple to replace it on iOS.) Microsoft officials have said their goal is to make the new Edge a truly cross-platform browser, based on the same core codebase . At Ignite in March, Microsoft execs outlined plans for getting Edge to run on the same codebase so as to improve their own engineering processes. Microsoft's plan isn't to replicate every desktop feature on mobile (which would be dumb), but to share features with the desktop Edge "thoughtfully," according to an Ignite presentation slide that my Windows Weekly cohost Paul Thurrott posted. Android users interested in testing the new new Edge in Canary (meaning updated daily) can … [Read more...] about Microsoft takes a step toward unifying its Edge codebase across all platforms
Winning start: Lewis Hamilton celebrates after victory in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. IMOLA, Italy: \Lewis Hamilton and his Mercedes team expect Max Verstappen and Red Bull to bounce back and give them a torrid test of speed at this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the second round of this year's world championship. Three weeks on from the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, where Hamilton dug deep into his reserves to conjure up his record 96th Formula One victory ahead of the Dutchman, the seven-time champion knows it will be a challenge to repeat his 2020 win at the old Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was delighted to see Hamilton triumph in the opener, but said he is under no illusion that Mercedes have proved they can match the obvious speed of this season's Red Bull car. "We may have won the first round, but we are under no illusions that this is going to be an easy season," he said. "Our car still lacks speed on a single lap … [Read more...] about Mercedes admit Red Bull ‘edge’ ahead of Imola showdown
There have been recent media announcements about the Pasig River Expressway, also known as Parex — a proposed 19.37- kilometer six-lane elevated expressway running the length of the Pasig River, with an estimated cost of P81.5 billion. According to the media reports, the toll way project of San Miguel Corp. was approved in August 2020 by the Tollways Regulatory Board. Is this what we need at this time? And have we considered what we would be sacrificing in the process? For decades, the popular response to traffic has been more roads or wider roads. This approach has failed. The painful lesson is that roads designed mainly for the use of cars actually diminish mobility for all — they end up attracting greater motor vehicle use leading to more road congestion (a phenomenon known as “induced demand”). The proponents of the Parex project claim that it can move up to 120,000 cars a day; it is described as the “ultimate solution to traffic.” But we have heard this “promise” many times … [Read more...] about Do we really need a Pasig River expressway?
