A pair of NHS workers who couldn't see one another due to their PPE said the eye contact between them is what made them fall in love. Nurse Ollie Foster, 43, and orthopaedic specialist Helen Birch, 33, "communicated through their eyes" behind visors when they first met on the ICU of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. They started working together when Helen was transferred to Ollie's same ward when she volunteered to help in critical care when the pandemic broke out. The couple "hit it off" immediately, Ollie said, as he described how he had been single for two years and had given up on finding love due to how he'd been hurt in the past. "We were total strangers and had never come across one another before, but we connected immediately and could communicate so easily, even non verbally as it was like we were communicating through our eyes, behind our visors. "We worked so well together as a team, we bounced off each other straight away. "We were dressed head to toe in PPE so … [Read more...] about NHS workers fall in love while working in ICU and ‘head to toe’ in PPE

Carer arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter over Covid death
A home carer has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in relation to the death of a Covid-19 patient. In what is believed to be the first case of its kind, police are understood to be investigating allegations related to infection, prevention and control. The arrest was brought to the attention of the United Kingdom Homecare Association by the insurance company handling the case. Chief executive Jane Townson, who has no further details about the case, alerted the UKHA’s 2,000 members this week - warning them to make sure they are following all relevant government guidance on PPE and hygiene for care workers. She said: “We have been warning for some time that this could happen and the fact that it actually has is quite a wake up call for care providers.” The offence of gross negligence manslaughter is committed where the death is a result of a grossly negligent – though otherwise lawful – act or omission on the part of the defendant. Ms Townson added: … [Read more...] about Carer arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter over Covid death

Please don’t call 999 because KFC ran out of chicken – get angry about all this stuff instead
If someone denied me the chance to ingest a KFC bargain bucket with chicken supplied from Thailand, via aeroplane, shipped to a warehouse without a cold storage licence and left in a queue of overheating lorries for hours I'd thank them profusely. I'd feel outrage for the conditions the chicken had endured both alive and dead, outrage at the corporate stupidity that couldn't switch delivery firms more efficiently, and outrage at myself for being so keen on the idea because the only times I've ever attended a KFC 'restaurant' were 24 hours after being dumped, filled with self-loathing and wearing tear-stained pyjamas. Halfway through the bucket you start to realise that you don't hate life that much. Two-thirds into it you start to feel you can do better than this. And when you notice the smell of cooking oil has penetrated your hair fibres you decide it's time for a wash and a healthier outlook. There are some, though, who regard KFC as a reasonable and regular meal. Heaven … [Read more...] about Please don’t call 999 because KFC ran out of chicken – get angry about all this stuff instead
