Marie Newman Installs Trans Rights Flag Outside Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Office
After trading barbs on the U.S. House floor over transgender rights, the fight between U.S. Representatives Marie Newman and Marjorie Taylor Greene has taken an even more visible turn. Newman, an Illinois Democrat, has erected a blue, pink and white flag—which symbolizes support for equal rights for transgender people—outside her Capitol office door. It happens to be directly across from the controversial Georgia Republican's office. "Thought we'd put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door," Newman tweeted Wednesday, alongside a video of her installing her new large flag. Earlier on Thursday, Greene took to the House floor to slam the Equality Act, which would add people who are gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual to those who are protected under the Civil Rights Act. "It has very serious consequences," Greene said. "It will put trans rights above women's rights." Greene decried that her daughter who plays softball would have to compete … [Read more...] about Marie Newman Installs Trans Rights Flag Outside Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Office

The Globes showed tons of love to Netflix this year; so, it's a safe bet that Aaron Sorkin's drama, "The Trial of the Chicago 7," or David Fincher's "Mank" will win. Neither are *that* great, but "Mank" celebrates old Hollywood as much as its subject, "Citizen Kane" screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. What should win? "Nomadland" is the best film of this bunch, but the … [Read more...] about Who’s getting a Golden Globe? Our predictions for this year’s winners on Sunday

Key Podcast Takeaways from Spotify’s Big Event
Photo: Rob DeMartin/Spotify It’s been just over two years since Spotify cannonballed into podcasting, marking its spendy February 2019 acquisitions of Gimlet Media and Anchor as a splashy first step in the company’s expansionary transition from a music streaming platform towards something that’s significantly more than that. It was a scaling up of ambition, one that founder and CEO Daniel Ek conceptually outlined in a blog post titled “Audio-First” published at the time. As has been chronicled at length in this newsletter, that transition went on to include a string of further acquisitions (Parcast, The Ringer, Megaphone), a steady drumbeat of buzzy content partnerships (Joe Rogan, the Obamas, Kim Kardashian, etc.), and a bevvy of product experiments that poke at the edges of the current on-demand audio experience (playlists, vodcasts, talk-music mixes, etc.). The past two years are abundant with Spotify-filled headlines, and they collectively exert the feel of a show of … [Read more...] about Key Podcast Takeaways from Spotify’s Big Event
