Volvo will only sell all-electric vehicles by 2030, is moving all EV sales to online-only model
What just happened? Volvo has announced it will only sell electric vehicles by 2030, phasing out all car models with combustion engines, including hybrids, over the next nine years. The company previously said it's aiming for 50 percent of global sales to consist of fully electric cars by 2025 and wants to become an all-electric automaker within twenty years; this new 2030 target represents an “acceleration” of the electrification strategy. Swedish company Volvo, owned by the Chinese Geely Group, says the new target date is driven by strong early demand for its first EV, the XC40 Recharge that launched last year, and an expected expansion of EV charging infrastructure. Volvo also said it is increasing its focus on online sales. The company will be rolling out several new fully-electric models in the coming years, all of which will only be available online. Volvo's first all-electric vehicle, the XC40 Recharge “To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead … [Read more...] about Volvo will only sell all-electric vehicles by 2030, is moving all EV sales to online-only model
Volvo to become fully electric by 2030
Swedish carmaker Volvo Cars said on Tuesday that it plans to become a fully electric car company by 2030. Volvo, owned by China's Geely, said it will phase out any car in its global portfolio with an internal combustion engine, including hybrids, by 2030. It estimates that 50 percent of its global sales will be electric cars by 2025. The 2030 ambition is driven by strong demand for electrified cars in recent years and a firm conviction that the market for combustion engine cars is a shrinking one, said the carmaker. "To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future – electric and online," said Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson. "We are fully focused on becoming a leader in the fast-growing premium electric segment." Samuelsson told China Daily that Volvo invests 5 percent of its revenue each year on research and development, with a primary focus on electrification. Volvo launched its first fully … [Read more...] about Volvo to become fully electric by 2030
Volvo to make only electric vehicles by 2030
Volvo said it will make only electric vehicles by 2030. The Swedish automaker said on March 2 that it is phasing out the production of all cars with internal combustion engines — including hybrids. “There is no long-term future for cars with an internal combustion engine,” said Henrik Green, Volvo’s chief technology officer. Volvo’s announcement follows General Motors’ pledge earlier this year to make only battery-powered vehicles by 2035. Volvo also said that, while its all-electric vehicles will be sold exclusively online, dealerships will “remain a crucial part of the customer experience and will continue to be responsible for a variety of important services such as selling, preparing, delivering and servicing cars.” As part of the announcement on March 2, the Swedish automaker will unveil its second fully electric car, a follow-up to last year’s XC40 Recharge, a compact SUV. Volvo said its goal is to have half of its global sales to be fully electric cars by 2025, with the … [Read more...] about Volvo to make only electric vehicles by 2030
Budget 2020: Electric vehicles, environmental concerns on the agenda
SINGAPORE: Electric vehicles (EVs) were on the agenda again on the second day of Budget debate, with several Members of Parliament (MPs) asking if other alternative fuels were also being considered in the country’s move to a cleaner transport sector. The questions came after Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat announced plans to phase out the use of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2040 , as well as a number of measures to spur EV adoption here in his Budget speech last week . Jurong GRC MP Ang Wei Neng asked if alternatives were being considered to complement the use of EVs here. Mr Ang - who is also the chief executive of ComfortDelGro Taxis, which has four EVs as part of its fleet - noted that while he supported the move towards cleaner vehicles, Singapore should not bet on the “wrong green car”. He pointed to the country’s experience with compressed natural gas (CNG) driven vehicles - once touted as the clean alternative to petrol, but whose popularity … [Read more...] about Budget 2020: Electric vehicles, environmental concerns on the agenda
