WASHINGTON: Chaos gripped major US airports on Sunday (Mar 15) as Americans returning from coronavirus-hit European countries overwhelmed authorities attempting to process the surge. Frustrated passengers complained of hours-long lines, crowded and unsanitary conditions and general disarray in the system for screening people for symptoms of the virus. "Very close quarters," Ann Lewis Schmidt told CNN, describing conditions at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. "So if we didn't have the virus before, we have a great chance of getting it now!" Schmidt said. US airports have been hit with a flood of Americans, many of them students, since restrictions on travel from Europe ordered by US President Donald Trump took effect at midnight on Friday. American Airlines posts US$2.2 billion loss on pandemic, first since bankruptcy exit
REUTERS: American Airlines on Thursday posted a US$2.2 billion net loss, its first quarterly loss since emerging from bankruptcy in 2013, and warned of a roughly US$70 million per day cash burn in the second quarter as the coronavirus pandemic halts travel. Shares were down 4per cent at US$12.11. Airlines - among the sectors hardest-hit by the pandemic - have grounded jets, canceled flights and suspended dividends and share buybacks among measures to shore up cash. "We all expect that recovery will be slow and demand for air travel will be suppressed for quite some time," Chief Executive Doug Parker told investors. The U.S. airline swung to a net loss of US$2.2 billion in the first quarter to March 31 from a US$185 million profit a year earlier. Feared and revered for her aggressive style, the 5ft 4in San Diego native's firepower saw her nicknamed in reference to the U.S. Navy battleship USS Missouri - which was dubbed "Big Mo." Connolly exploded onto the scene in 1951 by winning the U.S. Championships at 16 years, 11 months and 19 days - at the time the youngest winner of the tournament. She repeated her success over the next two years.
