Golf star Justin Thomas apologises for “inexcusable” homophobic slur as PGA responds

· January 10, 2021 ·

World No.3 Justin Thomas has apologised after uttering a homophobic slur during the third round of the Sentry Tournament of Champions. Thomas was heard using the derogatory word towards himself after missing a par putt on the fourth hole at Kapalua, reports the Press Association. Speaking to the Golf Channel after a 68 which left him four shots off the lead, Thomas said: “There’s just no excuse. I’m an adult, I’m a grown man. "There’s absolutely no reason for me to say anything like that. “It’s terrible. I’m extremely embarrassed. It’s not who I am. It’s not the kind of person that I am. "But it’s… unfortunately I did it and I have to own up to it and I’m very apologetic. “Like I said, it’s inexcusable. I’m speechless. It’s bad. There’s no other way to put it. I need to do better. I need to be better. It’s definitely a learning experience. “I deeply apologize to everybody and anybody who I offended and I’ll be better because of it.” The PGA Tour said in a … [Read more...] about Golf star Justin Thomas apologises for “inexcusable” homophobic slur as PGA responds

Golf: Spieth Season? Recent play hints at major comeback for major winner

· March 4, 2021 ·

Is he back? The chatter continued the following week when he held the solo lead after the second and third rounds at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, evidence by his supporters that the previous week had not been a fluke. Twice, he holed out from more than 100 yards - just the second player in TOUR history to pull off that feat. Is he back? Another positive sign through the first two rounds of The Genesis Invitational - in contention and inside the top 12 of the leaderboard for a 10th consecutive week. Consistency and confidence were on full display. So, is Jordan Spieth back? It depends on your definition and perspective, of course. If being back requires returning to the winner's circle, then no, Spieth is not yet all the way back. He remains in search of his first PGA TOUR win since the 2017 Open Championship, a drought currently at 79 worldwide starts. For a player who will eventually enter the World Golf Hall of Fame, winning remains the gold standard. But if … [Read more...] about Golf: Spieth Season? Golf: Patrick Reed makes only the third hole-in-one in Winged Foot’s U.S. Open history

· September 17, 2020 ·

The American stepped up to the par-three seventh having just made a birdie on the previous hole, and his day was about to get a whole lot better. With 165 yards between tee and the pin, Reed's shot initially hit the green a few yards short but then bounced straight in, much to the 30-year-old's disbelief. Reed, who almost looked embarrassed by the ace, subsequently moved to one under par, having earlier made double bogey at the par-four fifth. The 2020 U.S. Open is the sixth edition to be held at Winged Foot. Mark McCumber made a hole-in-one at the 10th hole when Winged Foot staged the major in 1984, while Peter Hedblom had his moment of glory in 2006 at the third hole. Golf: Molinari sees off Spieth, Woods to win maiden major at The Open

· July 22, 2018 ·

CARNOUSTIE, United Kingdom: Italy's Francesco Molinari emerged from the pack on a thrilling final day at Carnoustie to win The Open on Sunday (Jul 22), seeing off the challenges of reigning champion Jordan Spieth and a revived Tiger Woods to win the first major of his career. At the age of 35, he becomes the first Italian player ever to win a major, after keeping his cool in remarkable fashion when almost all around him seemed to be losing theirs on a warm but windy afternoon on the Scottish coast. A two-under-par round of 69 allowed him to finish on eight-under, two shots clear of the quartet of Justin Rose, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner on six-under. Molinari had started the day three shots behind a trio of overnight leaders in Schauffele, Kisner and Spieth, who were all nine under par when they teed off. The latter had been hoping to become the first player since Padraig Harrington a decade ago to retain the Claret Jug, but he faded with a final-round 76 … [Read more...] about Golf: Molinari sees off Spieth, Woods to win maiden major at The Open
