Mooncake madness: Why overindulging on these festive treats could be a health risk

· September 26, 2017 ·

SINGAPORE: Mooncakes might be physically small, but they can have a big impact on your waistline - just one could contain the same number of calories as a full meal. For example, an average-size 192g baked lotus mooncake with two egg yolks has about 890 calories, according to the Health Promotion Board’s (HPB) nutrient analysis. That is equivalent to about four bowls of rice, said Ms Bibi Chia, principal dietitian at Raffles Diabetes and Endocrine Centre. She added that one of these mooncakes has the same amount of sugar as about 1.5 cans of cola. Other types of mooncakes, like those covered in snowskin, do not fare much better. A bite-size portion of an eighth of a snowskin mooncake is worth 93 calories, which works out to about half a bowl of rice. All this spells bad news for people looking to enjoy the tasty treats of the Mid-Autumn Festival while still following a healthy diet. The challenge can be further intensified with more unusual fillings like durian and champagne … [Read more...] about Mooncake madness: Why overindulging on these festive treats could be a health risk

· March 4, 2021 ·

FYRE Festival co-founder Billy McFarland in his first jail interview admitted that he lied to investors who pumped millions of dollars into the fraudulent event. McFarland - whose unauthorised interview from behind bars has landed him in solitary confinement - told radio personality Jordan Harbinger about his lies, which he acknowledged were a crime . “I knowingly lied to them to raise money for the festival. Yes. And that’s what the crime was,” McFarland, who is serving six years, said. “The crime was inexcusably lying about the status of the company to get the money I thought I needed for the festival.” However, McFarland put the most blame on “setting an unrealistic time frame” to get the festival up and running in 2017. “Had we given ourselves a year or two and had I obviously not made the terrible decision to lie to my backers, I think we could have been in a bit better place, but regardless of the mistakes that I made or what made things go wrong,” he said. … [Read more...] about Fyre Festival boss Billy McFarland admits he LIED to investors in first jail interview that’s landed him in solitary
