The government has stuck to its July 7 deadline for making the first instalment by foreign internet companies of India’s own version of Google Tax. The Income Tax Department late night Friday modified the payment challan, adding the option of 2 per cent equalisation levy or so called Google Tax for the foreign e-commerce operators. This clears the confusion on the payment deadline as foreign firms until now did not have procedural clarity. ETCFO exclusively reported on July 3 that the government is unlikely to defer the first instalment deadline, citing a senior finance ministry official.India introduced the 2 per cent equalization levy or so called Google Tax on e-commerce supply of services, beginning this financial year 2020-21.
