One year on, New Zealand remembers volcano tragedy that killed and injured dozens
WELLINGTON: New Zealand on Wednesday (Dec 9) marked the one-year anniversary of the volcanic eruption on White Island that killed 22 people, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern describing the tragic event as "devastating" for the country. The eruption on White Island, also known by its Maori name of Whakaari, left nearly all survivors struggling with severe and long-term injuries. "In a nation that has experienced so much pain and loss in recent times, Dec 9, 2019 was devastating," Ardern said at a commemoration event in Whakatane, a town close to the island. She sent a message of love to survivors and affected families and thanked the first responders and medical professionals who helped. There were 47 people on the island when the volcano erupted at 2.11pm, exploding twice in quick succession and spewing plumes of ash up to 12,000 feet into the air. The All Blacks are set to play Italy and Fiji in home test matches during the July international window, then plan to meet Ireland, France and Italy in a tour to the northern hemisphere in November. Two more matches in November are being negotiated, and might be played at venues in Asia or the United States. The Rugby Championship will again take place at the end of the Super Rugby season and may again be played with all teams in one location. New Zealand Rugby on Thursday stressed the schedule depends on the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The All Blacks played only six tests this year, four in the Tri-Nations series involving Argentina and Australia and two more as part of a Bledisloe Cup series against Australia. “The All Blacks schedule for 2021 is starting to take shape,” NZR chief executive … [Read more...] about Rugby: New Zealand All Blacks float a 15-test schedule for 2021
