SINGAPORE: Finnish biofuel producer and oil refiner Neste is spending €1.4 billion (US$1.6 billion) to more than double output at its Singapore refinery to meet rising global demand for renewable energy. The refinery produces renewable fuels, mainly from waste and residues such as used cooking oil, animal fat from food industry waste, fish fat from fish processing waste and residues from vegetable oil processing. The Singapore expansion, Neste's single biggest investment to date, will increase renewable fuel output by up to 1.3 million tonnes per year (tpy) from the current 1 million tpy, chief executive Peter Vanacker told Reuters. "We believe that the market in renewables will quadruple at least until 2030," he said in an interview ahead of a ceremony to kick off the expansion. Neste is aiming to capitalise on global growth in diesel and jet fuel consumption, Vanacker added. The expanded plant in Tuas, in the western part of the city-state, which is expected to be ready … [Read more...] about Finland’s Neste expands Singapore refinery as it taps renewable growth

Rapper A$AP Rocky found guilty of assault in Sweden but spared jail time
US rapper A$AP Rocky was convicted in Sweden on Wednesday (Aug 14) of assault over a Stockholm street brawl, but spared time in jail after a high-profile trial that had led President Donald Trump to accuse Sweden of treating him unfairly. A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, and two members of his entourage were found guilty of kicking and beating 19-year-old Mustafa Jafari after an argument. But the court said allegations they hit him with a glass bottle, which might have brought a tougher sentence, were not proven. "In an overall assessment, the court finds that the assault has not been of such a serious nature that a prison sentence must be chosen," Senior Judge Per Lennerbrant told a courtroom packed with reporters. The rapper, who shot to fame with his 2011 debut Live.Love.A$AP, was not in court for the verdict. He was released on Aug 2 after 31 days in jail and a three-day trial, in what legal experts said at the time was a sign the judge was likely not to jail … [Read more...] about Rapper A$AP Rocky found guilty of assault in Sweden but spared jail time
Member states’ border controls amid pandemic deal blow to EU’s open border policy
COPENHAGEN - A formal letter of disapproval from the European Commission, sent to six European Union (EU) member states contravening the open border policy of the Schengen Treaty, has been met with silence or intransigence from government officials. All six EU states have 10 days to respond to the commission after receiving the letter on Feb 22. According to the EU laws, if the member states fail to undertake necessary measures, the commission could take legal actions against them. The four-page document, sent to Germany, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Belgium and Hungary, highlights the commission's concern that their unilateral border control measures to curb the spread of the pandemic risk "fragmentation and disruptions to free movement and to supply chains", according to Christian Wigand, a spokesperson for the commission. The German federal government has declared the Czech Republic, Slovakia and large parts of Tyrol in Austria as so-called "areas of variant of concern" since … [Read more...] about Member states’ border controls amid pandemic deal blow to EU’s open border policy

Does using the sauna actually help you lose weight? And does it count as cardio?
You might book yourself a massage to destress and knead out those knots in your muscles. But not many in Singapore would make it a point to visit the sauna as a wellness must-do, especially when the activity has a sleazy connotation in some circles. But those who do enjoy a proper schvitz would tell you that the heat works wonders on tight muscles and stressed minds. And as the perspiration drips off your body, a weight seems to be lifted from your shoulders, too. As beneficial as taking the sauna is, there are also some commonly held notions that are actually inaccurate. Take detoxifying the body and weight loss, for instance. “Studies have shown that up to 97 per cent of sweat produced while being in a traditional sauna is water and the rest is salt with no toxins found,” said Ray Loh, senior physiologist at the Sports Medicine and Surgery Clinic at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. As for weight loss, that’s just from the water you’ve sweated off. Loh said that infrared sauna … [Read more...] about Does using the sauna actually help you lose weight? And does it count as cardio?
