But first, some backstory: NASA and NOAA joined up last year to launch the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite, and other than delivering tons of interesting scientific details of the Earth’s atmosphere and surface, that satellite has provided some incredible imagery of our little blue dot at night. That aforementioned imagery makes for some stunning wallpapers, and the resolutions provided are gigantic sizes at up to 8192 x 8192 pixels for squared images, and a whopping 12150 x 6075 pixels for the rectangular images, meaning you won’t have any trouble finding wallpaper with freakishly high resolution goodness. Led by CEO Tim Cook, Apple has been making notable efforts toward being a more environmentally responsible corporate citizen, investing in solar farms, hydropower efforts, renewable forests, recycling programs, and other projects which are generally considered positive given that humans currently live on planet Earth and lack a backup planet (sorry, there’s no Time Machine app for Earth – but if there was… dinosaurs!). Apple even now has a nice subsection of their website devoted to covering their environmental efforts , and like many other sections of the Apple site, it’s filled with beautiful high resolution images that can be extracted and used as some lovely background wallpaper for the Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or heck, even a Windows PC or Android. Apple has been running an Earth Day Lessons campaign aimed at students to raise awareness of various environmental issues surrounding conservation, ecosystems, and ecology. Like many other microsites on Apple.com, these web pages are filled with beautiful high resolution images, this time themed around Earth, featuring subjects from zebras, shorelines, kelp forests, to tree farms and sea otters. Well it turns out if you spend a little bit of time with the Web Inspector tool, you can uncover some pretty great wallpapers on the Apple environmental focus site. page here and linked to the Apple CDN for easy downloading. Apple has released two new commercials for Earth Day. The first advertisement emphasizes the companies renewable energy efforts to power servers, and the other second ad focuses on recycling iPhones with the help of a robot. The commercials are embedded below for easy viewing. iMessage – Renewable Energy The iMessage commercial focuses on the fact that the servers running iMessage are powered by renewable energy sources. The song playing during the Earth iMessage ad is called “Ophelia” by The Lumineers. “Every time you send an iMessage, you’re showing some love for the Earth.” Siri and Liam – Earth Day The Siri and Liam commercial highlights a robot, named Liam, that recycles iPhones. The Liam robot is recycling the iPhone which Siri is running on, as Siri tries to bribe Liam to spare the device. “Siri and Liam have differing views on how to best celebrate Earth Day.” And yes, apparently Liam the Recycling Robot is real.
