New wooden satellite is part advertising, part student project
Late last year, we were extremely skeptical of reports regarding a plan for wooden satellites that seemed confused about what could be gained from using the natural material. But a wooden satellite looks like it might get to orbit later this year, via a project we can fully endorse. It's a bit of silly advertising by a plywood manufacturer that will ensure that a student project gets sent to space. The project, based in Finland, is called the WISA WOODSAT , and it has taken a bit of an indirect route to orbit. The design is based on cubesat format called Kitsat , which is intended for student projects. If the goal is simply to expose students to what it takes to make a compact satellite (the design is a 10 cm/side cube), the satellite can be built using cheap, easy-to-obtain hardware. But it can also be made using space-rated materials and sent to orbit. The WOODSAT started out as more of the former, with students around the country contributing different parts to a cubesat … [Read more...] about New wooden satellite is part advertising, part student project
The Latest: Hurricanes, Ducks swap defencemen
The Latest on the NHL trade deadline (all times Eastern): 5 p.m. The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenceman Haydn Fleury to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for defenceman Jani Hakanpaa and a sixth-round draft pick in 2022. Hurricanes president and general manager Don Waddell pointed to Hakanpaa’s 6-foot-5, 218-pound frame as a physical boost to the blue line. The 29-year-old Hakanpaa is third in the league this year with 168 hits. He has one goal and one assists in 47 career NHL games with Anaheim. He was also a teammate of current Hurricanes star centre Sebastian Aho in Finland several years ago. The Hurricanes parted with a former first-round pick Fleury, the No. 7 overall selection in 2014. The 24-year-old Fleury had one goal in 35 games this season. The Hurricanes kept goaltenders Petr Mrazek, Alex Nedeljkovic and James Reimer. Waddell said the team was “comfortable” with keeping all three, while the team’s roster and cap space meant the Hurricanes “weren’t put in a … [Read more...] about The Latest: Hurricanes, Ducks swap defencemen
The first books printed in the Philippines
THE first book printed in the United States was The Whole Booke of Psalmes by Stephen Daye, the first printer in Cambridge, Massachusetts Bay Colony, in 1640. There are only 11 extant copies of this book; only five of which are complete. In Finland, the first printing press started working in the premises of the Royal Academy of Abo (Turku) in 1642. The first book was a dissertation in Latin by Michael Wexionius, titled De prudentia turn legislatoria turn politica seu civili (About the wisdom that is necessary for legislators and statesmen), a work that is probably as necessary now as then. Canada did not have a printing press until 1752. It was in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the oldest printed item was not a book, but copies of the first newspaper, the Halifax Gazette. In Australia, the oldest printed item is a playbill, advertising a performance at the theater in Sydney. It was printed by convict George Hughes, operator of Australia’s first printing press, in October 1796. This … [Read more...] about The first books printed in the Philippines
