Anxiety Contagion: Tips for Relief

· March 15, 2020 ·

How to achieve calm in a state of panic. Source: Zoffness In the face of COVID-19, we’re seeing a viral spread of anxiety contagion . Panic is as contagious as any pathogen and is dangerous in its own right. Research shows that when we see people panicking – buying up all available water, for example – our brains respond with a similar anxiety spike. We’re built that way because it can be adaptive in certain situations. But it can also be maladaptive . Sustained anxiety is literally bad for your health: The more you panic, the less functional your immune system becomes. The science of anxiety is this: in the face of a real or perceived emergency, your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) kicks on, triggering the release of a stress hormone called cortisol . Over time, cortisol suppresses your immune system, causing a decrease in white blood cells – the cells that help you fight off viruses — putting you at greater risk of infection. The more you panic, the less able … [Read more...] about Anxiety Contagion: Tips for Relief

How to Transition to Seeing Your Therapist Online

· March 19, 2020 ·

Source: agenturfotografin/Adobe Stock Seeing a therapist used to imply being in the same room with them, but not any longer. Teleconferencing has made it possible to see a mental health professional from a distance. With recent requirements for social distancing, many therapists and clients have had to either pause their work or make other arrangements, including meeting by video conference. I've been providing teletherapy services for about a decade now, and in the past year transitioned to doing only teletherapy. Here are some common questions and issues that come up when thinking about making the transition. Will My Therapist Agree to Online Sessions? Some therapists (myself included) are enthusiastic about using teletherapy, some won't use it at all, and a large number of therapists approach it with some reservations. I've been surprised how many therapists are now moving to it with the COVID-19 outbreak and resulting social distancing. Most therapists generally … [Read more...] about How to Transition to Seeing Your Therapist Online

GeForce RTX 3060 12GB Review: Hope Springs Eternal

· February 25, 2021 ·

The Nvidia RTX 3060 12GB brings a new level of performance to the mainstream market--sort of. Officially, the RTX 3060 launches today with prices starting at just $329. Realistically? You're as likely to find one at that price as you are to find an RTX 3060 Ti at $399, RTX 3070 at $499, or RTX 3080 at $699 — not entirely impossible, perhaps, but highly unlikely. Nvidia's Ampere architecture now powers many of the best graphics cards , and they're all seeing massive levels of demand from both gamers and cryptocurrency miners . Nvidia has added firmware and driver code to detect Ethereum mining, which should help a bit, but when people are willing to pay extreme scalper pricing on eBay , even for cards like the GTX 1660 Super and RTX 2060, everything in our GPU benchmarks hierarchy is pretty much sold out right now. Nvidia is even working with partners to bring back previous generation Turing and Pascal cards . None of that makes this a bad GPU, … [Read more...] about GeForce RTX 3060 12GB Review: Hope Springs Eternal

Please don’t buy these cheap Android tablets

· February 24, 2021 ·

Not everyone wants to shell out a bunch of cash for a high-end tablet, and it makes sense. While I have turned my iPad into my laptop replacement , some prefer simply to use their tablet to watch the occasional series on Netflix, browse the web, and read the news. If that’s you, you might be tempted to open up Amazon dot com, and find the cheapest tablet you can get your hands on. You should avoid doing that. I get it. Why not spend as little as possible for a product that you won’t use all that much? But in the not-so-long term, you’ll likely end up spending a whole lot more when you have to prematurely buy another tablet. Not to mention the fact that if you do a little research, you should be able to find something that’s a way better — and still not overpay. The worst offenders If you fire up Amazon and type in the word “smartwatch,” you’ll see dozens of off-brand devices that look like expensive alternatives, but cost less than $50. They’re almost all terrible … [Read more...] about Please don’t buy these cheap Android tablets
