Cricket: South Africa suspends all activities for 60 days

· March 16, 2020 ·

CAPE TOWN: Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Monday suspended all forms of the game in the country for 60 days after the government banned gatherings larger than 100 people in response to the threat of the coronavirus outbreak. The suspension applies to first-class, limited-overs, semi-professional, junior and amateur cricket, with the country’s domestic 50-over championship at the semi-final stage. "During this time of absolute caution and surveillance, we would like to call upon all our members and affiliates to desist from taking part in any cricket related gatherings and other transversal events that will include the congregation of large numbers of people and/or up to 100 people," CSA acting chief executive Jacques Faul said. The men's national side have no fixtures scheduled until a tour of the West Indies in late July. The West Indies board has suspended cricket activities for at least 30 days, it said on Saturday. The start of the Indian Premier League has been moved to … [Read more...] about Cricket: South Africa suspends all activities for 60 days

BCCI, ICC close to agreeing on number of events for next FTP cycle

· February 2, 2021 ·

FTP 2023-2031 by Vijay Tagore • Last updated on Share Tweet BCCI have been in favour of six ICC events in the next eight-year FTP cycle © Getty After a difference of opinion on the particulars of the next Future Tours Programme (FTP) from 2023-2031, it looks like the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are finally on the same page. Cricbuzz learns there's a fair understanding within the BCCI that the ICC have agreed to its stand and decided to organize only six world tournaments in the next cycle, and do away with the process of bidding to stage those global events. Theoretically, eight events in the next cycle were approved, in principle, by the ICC executive board in October 2019 but there would be little clarity around it even within the member boards, with the FTP calendar neither finalized nor approved. The BCCI's insistence on six world events in the next cycle … [Read more...] about BCCI, ICC close to agreeing on number of events for next FTP cycle

J.J. Watt may need to find a new number in Arizona

· March 2, 2021 ·

Getty Images When J.J. Watt officially suits up for the Cardinals, he most likely won’t be wearing No. 99. But that’s not because one of Watt’s new teammates has squatted on the number and refuses to give it up, Michael Pittman Jr.-style . The Cardinals retired No. 99 in honor of former running back/fullback Marshall Goldberg. After winning consecutive national championship at Pitt in 1937 and 1938 (his No. 42 for the Panthers also was retired), the Elkins, West Virginia native was a second-round draft pick of the then-Chicago Cardinals. He played for the Cardinals from 1939 through 1943, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, and returned to the Cardinals in 1946, playing through 1948. A seniors committee finalist for the Pro Football Hal of Fame in 2008, Goldberg ultimately was not elected. Goldberg died in 2006 at the age of 87. In 2012, Peyton Manning managed to unretire No. 18 in Denver, when Frank Tripucka agreed to let it be worn again. But that cuts against … [Read more...] about J.J. Cardinals announce J.J. Watt will wear No. 99

· March 2, 2021 ·

Getty Images The Cardinals organization retired No. 99 in honor of running back Marshall Goldberg, but the number is coming back into circulation. Goldberg’s daughter Ellen Goldberg Tullos said that her late father would be “ delighted ” to have Watt wearing the same number he wore while a member of the Chicago Cardinals. In a video posted to Arizona’s Twitter account, Watt is shown telling teammate Chandler Jones that he spoke to Tullos and is “ good to go ” in terms of the number. With that out of the way, the Cardinals formally announced on Tuesday that Watt will wear the same number he wore in Houston when he takes the field this season. The Cardinals also shared a photo of Watt signing his new two-year contract with the team and announced that Watt will be holding a press conference on Tuesday afternoon. Questions at that session are likely to focus more on what drew him to Arizona than his jersey number, although there’s a good chance that Goldberg and his … [Read more...] about Cardinals announce J.J. Who hits the biggest ball of all? Devon Conway ranks the Black Caps, and Finn Allen

· March 1, 2021 ·

NZ Cricket Firebirds' batting sensation Finn Allen blasts equal quickest century in New Zealand List A history. After Finn Allen gave another jolting reminder of his hitting power, his Firebirds opening partner believes the 21-year-old can make a seamless transition to international cricket - potentially later this month. But Devon Conway won’t go so far as to rank the best ball strikers in New Zealand cricket, diplomatically saying Allen, Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham could each claim that title on a given day. As Conway, Guptill and Neesham assembled in Wellington on Sunday with their Black Caps team-mates ahead of Wednesday’s Twenty20 game three against Australia at a crowd-free Sky Stadium, Allen was equalling records down the road at the Basin Reserve . Topscorer for the T20 Super Smash champions with 512 runs at a strike rate of 194, Allen matched Peter Fulton’s record for fastest list-A century in New Zealand (off 50 balls).
