Cricket: Staying home is like ‘nirvana’ for Australian players, says coach
MELBOURNE: Staying home during the national lockdown to contain the coronavirus is like "nirvana" for Australian cricketers as they generally have to live out of a suitcase, head coach Justin Langer has said. Australian cricket is in its off-season and has been largely insulated from the impact of the coronavirus outbreak, which has suspended all of the country's major sporting competitions that run during the autumn and winter. Some Australian players are signed with teams in the Indian Premier League but the lucrative T20 tournament has been postponed at least until mid-April and may end up being scrapped like many other tournaments that have succumbed to the pandemic. “The truth is for me personally and for all the players, this is like nirvana in the fact we’re home with our families, we sleep in our own beds, we eat home cooked dinners and we can still work in one degree or another from home," Langer told reporters on Thursday. COVID-19: Australia pulls athletes out of 2020 Games, eyes 2021
MELBOURNE: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted Australia to withdraw its athletes from the 2020 Olympics on Monday (Mar 23) while the nation's top rugby league competition was called off and other domestic sports scrambled to stave off financial ruin. With its athletes unable to train or prepare properly due to "social distancing" and a clampdown on travel, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) said it could no longer assemble a team for the Jul 24 to Aug 9 Games in Tokyo. "It’s clear the Games can’t be held in July," Australia Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman said on Monday, three days after telling reporters the team was committed to the schedule. "Our athletes have been magnificent in their positive attitude to training and preparing, but the stress and uncertainty has been extremely challenging for them." TORONTO: The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Paralympic Committee (CPC) said on Sunday (Mar 22) that Team Canada will not participate in the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the summer of 2020 due to concerns about the outbreak of the coronavirus. More than 14,000 people have died globally since the coronavirus outbreak began. READ: Postponing Olympics may become inevitable: Japan PM Abe "The COC and CPC urgently call on the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to postpone the Games for one year and we offer them our full support in helping navigate all the complexities that rescheduling the Games will bring," the committees said in a … [Read more...] about Canada pulls out of 2020 Olympic Games as pressure mounts on Tokyo
Du Plessis named among contracted players by Cricket South Africa
CAPE TOWN: Former captain Faf du Plessis has been offered a new 12-month contract by Cricket South Africa, suggesting he will extend his international career beyond October's Twenty20 World Cup in Australia. Du Plessis had said that he would review his international future after the tournament. But having been named as one of 16 recipients of a national contract for the 2020-21 season, he now looks set to be available for the next South African summer, which includes home tests against Sri Lanka and Australia. Du Plessis has handed over the captaincy in all three formats to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock. CSA have held back on handing out a final contract as an incentive to those who have not made the cut. "We have decided to keep the 17th men's contract open for the moment and players can qualify for it through performance," CSA Acting Chief Executive Jacques Faul said in a statement on Monday. Seamer Beuran Hendricks, who featured in the test series against England earlier … [Read more...] about Du Plessis named among contracted players by Cricket South Africa
