Love her or hate her, you can’t deny that Barbie has always been a game changer, and not just because she was the first doll with a waistline. In the mid-1990s, she changed games literally—computer games, that is. Women played a pivotal role in the development of arcade and early console-based video games. In the PC gaming industry, on the other hand, they were outnumbered and outranked by men, who almost always balked at the prospect of games for girls. As time passed, though, more and more research confirmed that girls were playing computer games, such as Myst and The Oregon Trail ; they simply lacked games expressly created for them. Translation: There was an untapped market. And so, in October 1996, Mattel Media released Barbie Fashion Designer on CD-ROM. Its basic concept was pretty straightforward: Players could design Barbie clothes and then print out the clothes on special paper for their dolls to wear. Barbie wasn’t the first PC game marketed to girls. It was, … [Read more...] about The ‘Girl Games’ of the ’90s Were Fun and Feminist

Cricket kind of gets forgotten in IPL; PSL, LPL more rewarding: Steyn
IPL VS OTHER T20 LEAGUES by Cricbuzz Staff • Last updated on Share Tweet "When you come to the PSL or the LPL, there's an importance on the cricket." © BCCI South African speedster Dale Steyn has said that the financial aspect of the Indian Premier League, the world's most lucrative T20 league, steers the focus off of cricket and he finds the likes of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and the Lankan Premier League (LPL) "slightly more rewarding". Steyn, who is currently plying his trade for the Quetta Gladiators franchise in the PSL, told Cricket Pakistan that the duration of the IPL was also a factor in him opting out of this season as he wanted some more time to himself. "I wanted to take a bit more time off. I found that playing in those other leagues was slightly more rewarding as a player," Steyn said. "I think when you go to the IPL there are such big squads and so many big names and so much emphasis on the amount … [Read more...] about Cricket kind of gets forgotten in IPL; PSL, LPL more rewarding: Steyn
Cricket: Battle-hardened Australia ready for ‘biggest’ game – Lanning
MELBOURNE: Australia captain Meg Lanning says the defending champions' rocky road to the Twenty20 World Cup final against India has them ready for the "biggest game" of women's cricket in Melbourne on Sunday. Since losing their tournament opener to India, the hosts lost talismanic all-rounder Ellyse Perry to injury and scraped through a string of do-or-die games, including the rain-hit semi-final against South Africa, to reach the Melbourne Cricket Ground decider. Lanning said the testing campaign had them in good stead to take on Harmanpreet Kaur's undefeated India. "It hasn't been an easy road to the final but I wouldn't have had it any other way," Lanning told reporters at the MCG on Saturday. "We're sort of match and battle-hardened, really. "The last four games have been cut-throat, must-win clashes ... and we've had to deal with that pressure and the need to stand up when you're under the pump. "I've been extremely proud about how the group's handled that." … [Read more...] about Cricket: Battle-hardened Australia ready for ‘biggest’ game – Lanning
Cricket: Australia bank on top four against buoyant New Zealand
SYDNEY: Australia will be banking on their top order as they seek to end their five-match winless streak in one-day internationals against a buoyant New Zealand in the three-match series beginning in Sydney on Friday. Aaron Finch's men are smarting from a 3-0 whitewash in South Africa earlier this month, which followed their 2-1 series defeat in India, and their top order look exhausted after 12 months of relentless cricket. In New Zealand, they meet a side brimming with confidence having just whitewashed India both in the ODI and test series. Opener David Warner agreed the onus was on the frontline batsmen to fuel Australia's bid to reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy. "The only thing I can put it (Australia's losing streak) down to is the top four not scoring the bulk of the runs," Warner told reporters on Wednesday. "You can't do it all the time but at least one of us (has to) go on and be there at the end. "It is disappointing but at the end of the day we've got to … [Read more...] about Cricket: Australia bank on top four against buoyant New Zealand
