SolarWinds hackers broke into US cable firm and Arizona county, web records show

· December 19, 2020 ·

LONDON: Suspected Russian hackers accessed the systems of a U.S. internet provider and a county government in Arizona as part of a sprawling cyber-espionage campaign disclosed this week, according to an analysis of publicly-available web records. The hack, which hijacked ubiquitous network management software made by SolarWinds Corp to compromise a raft of U.S. government agencies and was first reported by Reuters, is one of the biggest ever uncovered and has sent security teams around the world scrambling to contain the damage. The intrusions into networks at Cox Communications and the local government in Pima County, Arizona, show that alongside victims including the U.S. departments of Defence, State, and Homeland Security, the hackers also spied on less high-profile organisations. A spokesman for Cox Communications said the company was working "around the clock" with the help of outside security experts to investigate any consequences of the SolarWinds compromise. Exclusive: Self-driving startup Ouster nears US$1.9 billion deal to go public -sources

· December 22, 2020 ·

REUTERS: Ouster Inc, a U.S. startup that makes lidar sensors for self-driving cars and smart cities, is nearing a deal to go public at a roughly US$1.9 billion valuation through a merger with a blank-check acquisition firm, according to people familiar with the matter. San Francisco-based Ouster plans to merge with Colonnade Acquisition Corp and the deal could be announced as early as Tuesday, the sources said, requesting anonymity ahead of an official announcement. Colonnade is a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) led by investors Remy Trafelet and Joseph Sambuco. It raised US$200 million in an initial public offering (IPO) in August with the aim of merging with a privately held company. The acquired company then becomes public as result of the merger, an alternative to the traditional IPO process. A tie-up with Colonnade would make Ouster the fifth lidar manufacturer this year to agree a SPAC merger to go public, following on from Velodyne Lidar Inc, Luminar, … [Read more...] about Exclusive: Self-driving startup Ouster nears US$1.9 billion deal to go public -sources

· February 26, 2021 ·

A harness racing trainer has been suspended after being caught injecting a suspected performance enhancing drug into two horses, hours before they were due to take to the track. They then raided his property, seizing syringes and other items of interest. Testing is under way to determine what the horses were injected with, but it is thought to be a banned substance. Hackers’ broad attack sets cyber experts worldwide scrambling to defend networks

· December 19, 2020 ·

REUTERS -Suspected Russian hackers who broke into U.S. government agencies also spied on less high-profile organizations, including groups in Britain, a U.S. internet provider and a county government in Arizona, according to web records and a security source. More details were revealed on Friday of the cyber espionage campaign that has computer network security teams worldwide scrambling to limit the damage as the outgoing administration of U.S. President Donald Trump offered little information. In Britain, a small number of organizations were compromised and not in the public sector, a security source said. Shares in cyber security companies FireEye Inc, Palo Alto Networks and Crowdstrike Holdings rose on Friday as investors bet that the spate of disclosures from Microsoft Corp and others would boost demand for security technology. Reuters identified Cox Communications Inc and Pima County, Arizona government as victims of the intrusion by running a publicly available coding … [Read more...] about Hackers’ broad attack sets cyber experts worldwide scrambling to defend networks

‘The way out is through’: Zuckerberg, executives set Facebook roadmap at year-end meeting

· December 16, 2020 ·

PALO ALTO: Facebook Inc's top executives sought to rally employees around business priorities like commerce and virtual reality at a year-end meeting on Tuesday, playing down criticism faced this year of the company's record on false and violent speech. "The way out is through. I believe the only way forward is to keep working," Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg told employees, according to audio of the address heard by Reuters. Zuckerberg acknowledged that criticism of Facebook had hurt staff morale, saying public scrutiny "comes with the territory." But he also struck a defiant tone, arguing that at least some of the pushback came from rivals or those with an interest in tarnishing Facebook's reputation. "We also have to recognize that we have many competitors, and there are people who believe that their success depends on us failing. So it's important that we don't just reflexively accept all criticism," he said. Critics have blasted Facebook this year over its hands-off … [Read more...] about ‘The way out is through’: Zuckerberg, executives set Facebook roadmap at year-end meeting
