Huawei Honor 8 review—Huawei’s software sucks all joy out of this $400 device

· September 21, 2016 ·

You can be forgiven for not being familiar with Huawei (pronounced "wah-way"). Other than the Nexus 6P , the Chinese company hasn't had much presence in the US. Despite mostly not dealing with the United States, Huawei is the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world and the third-largest smartphone OEM behind Samsung and Apple. At the beginning of this year, though, Huawei finally started bringing phones to the US. Today we're looking at the value entry from Huawei's sub-brand, "Honor," called the "Honor 8." The Honor 8 occupies Ars' favorite $400 price point (£370 in the UK), which hits the (hopefully) perfect balance of high-end specs without all the often-gimmicky bells and whistles of $700 to $800 phones. SPECS AT A GLANCE: Huawei Honor 8 SCREEN 1920×1080 5.2" (423ppi) LCD OS Android 6.0 with EMUI 4.1 CPU Eight-core HiSilicon Kirin 950 (four 2.3GHz Cortex A72 cores and four 1.8 GHz Cortex A53s cores) RAM 4GB GPU … [Read more...] about Huawei Honor 8 review—Huawei’s software sucks all joy out of this $400 device

Google Considering ‘Less Stringent’ Version of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency Feature for Android

· February 4, 2021 ·

Starting with iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, and tvOS 14.5, all of which are currently in beta testing , Apple will be requiring developers to receive a user's consent to track their activity across other apps and websites and/or access their device's random advertising identifier. Users will be presented with a prompt with options to "Allow Tracking" or "Ask App not to Track" when opening apps that wish to track their activity. According to Bloomberg 's Mark Gurman and Nico Grant , Google is exploring a similar measure for Android, but in a "less stringent" way. The report claims that the proposed solution could end up being similar to Google's planned Chrome web browser changes: To keep advertisers happy while improving privacy, the discussions around Google’s Android solution indicate that it could be similar to its planned Chrome web browser changes, the people said. The company said in 2020 that it intended to phase out third-party cookies in Chrome within two years. … [Read more...] about Google Considering ‘Less Stringent’ Version of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency Feature for Android

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals announced

· April 14, 2021 ·

The wonderfully creepy narrative adventure Oxenfree is getting a sequel, developer Night School Studio has announced. Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals was announced during this evening's Nintendo Indie Direct, and it'll launch for Switch in 2021 (and presumably other platforms too). Oxenfree 2's announcement comes a welcome surprise - it's been five years since the original Oxenfree launched and its developer has since been busy with other projects, such as its drunk-in-hell adventure Afterparty and a Mr Robot spin-off . More to the point - without spoiling anything - the original Oxenfree offered multiple ending paths depending on your choices throughout the game. It'll be interesting to see which (if any) story elements might reappear. This sequel is also set five years after the original Oxenfree, and stars new character Riley, an environmental researcher. She returns to her hometown of Camena to investigate - you guessed it - mysterious radio signals. "Words cannot begin to … [Read more...] about Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals announced
