5 things to know about carbon-free construction

· January 24, 2021 ·

We spend 90% of our time in the buildings where we live and work, shop and conduct business, in the structures that keep us warm in winter and cool in summer. But immense energy is required to source and manufacture building materials, to power construction sites, to maintain and renew the built environment. In 2019, building operations and construction activities together accounted for 38% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, the highest level ever recorded. To ensure that the Paris climate targets are met, the building and construction industry needs to become a climate leader by moving towards net zero construction. Its CO2 emissions need to be cut in half by 2030 for building stock to be carbon free by 2050, according to a recent report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). In response, a raft of new net zero building initiatives are focused on curbing emissions across the whole building lifecycle. Covid-19 medical mystery: US Baby with high viral load puzzles researchers

· February 24, 2021 ·

Among the more than 2,000 youngsters treated for Covid-19 at Children's National Hospital in the District of Columbia, USA, one newborn was unusual. The baby was very sick, for one. Most infected kids barely show symptoms and even the hospitalised ones tend to have mild cases. But the real surprise came when doctors measured the infant's viral load. It was 51,418 times the median of other paediatric patients. And when they sequenced the virus in the baby recently, they found a variant they hadn't seen before. Roberta DeBiasi, chief of infectious disease for the hospital, knew she couldn't conclude anything from one case. But it set off alarm bells. And as the researchers delved further into the mystery, they found evidence that a variant with a mutation called N679S may be circulating in the Mid-Atlantic region. Coronavirus digest: J&J vaccine prevents COVID – US regulator

· January 24, 2021 ·

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine effectively prevents severe coronavirus cases , the United States' top drug regulator said on Wednesday. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announcement paves the way for an emergency use authorization for the single-shot vaccine, which an independent committee is set to discuss. "The vaccine was effective in preventing COVID-19 using a less restrictive definition of the disease and for more severe disease, including COVID-19 requiring medical intervention, considering all cases starting 14 days after vaccination," the FDA document said. J&J said last month that its vaccine was 66% effective in preventing COVID-19 moderate to severe infections, including the variants detected in South Africa and Brazil. The one-shot jab could become the third vaccine the FDA approves as the US battles the pandemic that killed more than 500,000 of its residents. · January 29, 2021 ·

A single shot of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine can prevent 85 percent of severe cases of the disease, the company announced today . Overall, it is 66 percent effective against both moderate and severe cases of disease. “We’re 85 perfect effective at preventing severe disease, which we define as disease that makes you feel particularly sick at home, or may go to the hospital, or worse,” Mathai Mammen, global head of research and development at Johnson & Johnson, told CNN . The company plans to file for emergency authorization next week. The efficacy is lower than that of the two COVID-19 vaccines already authorized for use in the United States, which prevent about 95 percent of symptomatic cases of COVID-19.
