Next stop, Jane Austen: A literary tour of the United Kingdom

· September 25, 2018 ·

My mother and I had barely arrived at Richmond Park in South-West London when we discovered we were lost. Armed with homemade sandwiches and a spotty connection to Google Maps, we decided to walk on anyway, to see where the proverbial path would lead us. It was a lovely Saturday afternoon in late October, and the conditions were perfect for a stroll around Richmond Park, known for being the largest of London’s eight Royal Parks as well as its main attraction: Large herds of free-roaming deer. We wandered around the park for several hours, talking about everything and nothing in particular, soaking in the rays of the autumn sun that turned the red, orange, brown hues of the forest a warm yellow-gold. I thought about Virginia Woolf, one of the most difficult authors I ever had to read as a student. She had lived in Richmond with her husband Leonard Woolf for several years in the early 20 th century, and had written in her diaries about going on walks in the park. While I … [Read more...] about Next stop, Jane Austen: A literary tour of the United Kingdom

British Airways passengers can now buy £33 rapid Covid tests to take abroad

· March 4, 2021 ·

British Airways passengers can now buy a discounted Covid-19 test kit to take abroad, which they can use ahead of their return to the UK. Under the current UK travel rules, anyone arriving in the UK will need to show proof of a negative Covid test taken within 72 hours of departure - which leaves travellers having to find somewhere abroad to get a test. However, British Airways is offering discounted antigen kits from Qured for £33, which passengers can buy before they travel. Passengers can order the kits to their UK address, which are designed to be portable so passengers can take them abroad. They can then schedule a video call with one of Qured's professional health advisors for when it's time to administer the test, so that they can be guided through the process and check that it's done correctly. Qured says that the verified results can be available after 20 minutes, and customers with a negative test will be able to download a 'fit to fly' certificate for their … [Read more...] about British Airways passengers can now buy £33 rapid Covid tests to take abroad

Apple and Samsung CEOs Will Try to Resolve Patent Dispute

· August 20, 2012 ·

In a last-ditch effort to resolve the Apple-Samsung patent trial before it goes to the jury, the CEOs of both companies will have a conversation today over the phone, according the a report. Apple CEO Tim Cook will talk to Samsung CEO Kwon Oh Hyun over the phone to see if they can find some kind of middle ground before the high-stakes lawsuit is decided one way or the other, according to a Bloomberg report. The two companies' lawyers will then report to Judge Lucy Koh the results of the conversation, unnamed sources claim. It's not expected the conversation will be fruitful. The two companies sat down in private high-level talks, including the CEOs, in May, and they failed to settle the matter before it went to court. Although the report doesn't say so directly, it appears Koh may have ordered or requested today's phone call. British Airways prepares for travel restart with COVID-19 test kit plan

· March 4, 2021 ·

LONDON: British Airways has struck a deal with a COVID-19 testing kit provider as airlines prepare for the desperately-needed restart of summer travel, which is likely to include tests for passengers. After months of lockdown, airlines hope Britain will give the go-ahead from mid-May for holidays to restart, boosting an industry whose finances have been slammed by the pandemic. But it is not yet clear how mass foreign travel will resume. The government will provide more information on Apr 12. Travel corridors, which allowed unrestricted movement between Britain and some low-risk countries, could be re-introduced, but there could also be requirements for a negative COVID-19 test before departing for abroad and arriving home. British Airways (BA) said on Thursday (Mar 4) its new testing deal would make it easier for travellers to take a test when abroad to fulfil any requirements for their return to Britain. For US$46, its passengers can buy a testing kit which is delivered … [Read more...] about British Airways prepares for travel restart with COVID-19 test kit plan

Delta to spend US$30 million to neutralize most of its 2020 climate impact

· March 4, 2021 ·

REUTERS: Delta Air Lines said on Thursday it would spend more than US$30 million to offset 13 million metric tons of carbon emissions over 10 months last year as part of its pledge to help combat climate change. Delta said it had also cut emissions by retiring more than 200 older aircraft early in 2020 as it dealt with a plunge in demand from the coronavirus pandemic. Replacement planes will be 25per cent more fuel efficient, the U.S. airline said. Delta in February 2020 announced plans to invest US$1 billion over the next decade in initiatives like offsets, sustainable aviation fuel and carbon sequestration that would limit the impact of global air travel on the environment, the first airline to make a commitment of that scale. That followed moves in Europe by easyJet to offset emissions on all flights and British Airways and Air France on domestic flights. The amount Delta plans to pay for offsets from March 1 to Dec. 31 would equate to less than 0.35per cent of its … [Read more...] about Delta to spend US$30 million to neutralize most of its 2020 climate impact
