Society of Professional Journalists: 60 Minutes ‘Should Have Provided More Context’ to DeSantis Segment

· April 13, 2021 ·

The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) on Monday released a statement on the controversial 60 Minutes clip featuring an incomplete exchange between Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi, concluding the show “was not obligated to show an entire two-minute interview” but adding it “should have provided more context.” While SPJ explained it is “common practice for print, TV and radio reporters to use portions of longer quotes in a piece,” SPJ Ethics Committee Chair Danielle McLean concluded 60 Minutes “should have at least summed up the on-the-record context from the governor, especially since the segment reported the selection of a vaccine distributor may have been influenced by pay-to-play.” “But I do think Gov. DeSantis provided valuable context about the process the state went through that led to the decision to distribute vaccines at Publix grocery stores,” McLean said in the statement: I think ‘60 Minutes’ should have at least … [Read more...] about Society of Professional Journalists: 60 Minutes ‘Should Have Provided More Context’ to DeSantis Segment

Iran to begin 60% uranium enrichment after nuclear site incident

· April 13, 2021 ·

DUBAI (Reuters) -Iran said on Tuesday it would start enriching uranium to 60% purity, a move that would take the fissile material closer to the 90% suitable for a nuclear weapon, a day after Tehran accused arch-foe Israel of sabotaging a key nuclear site. The disclosure came soon before the resumption of talks in Vienna aimed at reviving Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with major powers, an accord Israel fiercely opposed, after former U.S. President Donald Trump abandoned it three years ago. Announcing 60% enrichment, chief nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi also said Iran would introduce 1,000 more centrifuge machines at Natanz, a nuclear installation hit by an explosion on Sunday that Tehran called an act of sabotage by Israel. "From tonight, practical preparations for 60% enrichment will begin in Natanz; 60% uranium is used to make a variety of radiopharmaceuticals," the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Iranian nuclear agency spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi as saying.
