With COVID disruptions to education leading to higher levels of dropouts, the Centre has set up a module to map out-of-school children, and connect them to mainstream education through special training centres. In a letter to State governments on Friday, Education Ministry Joint Secretary Maneesh Garg directed them to upload data about all out-of-school children at the block level for monitoring purposes. “In order to facilitate age appropriate admission of out-of-school children in the age group of 6-14 years in regular schools, financial provisions are made in the [Samagra Shiksha] scheme for arranging special training to bridge their learning gaps and mainstreaming them in schools,” said the letter. Recently announced data from parental control application Kaspersky Safe Kids provides a glimpse into the most searched websites by Vietnamese children and their time spent on apps during the COVID-19 pandemic, with YouTube being the app most used by the kids. Once installed, Kaspersky Safe Kids collected search queries and web browsing activities on devices that children use to access the Internet in oder to notify parents of content in “undesirable categories,” including adult media, alcohol, narcotics, tobacco, racism, and profanity. In their newly published 'Kids on the Web in 2021' report, the company looks into website hits, as well as screen time on mobile apps of children worldwide from May 2020 to April 2021 to deduce trends and obsessions among youths during the pandemic. According to their new report, “160 million children – 63 million girls and 97 million boys – were in child labor globally at the beginning of 2020, accounting for almost 1 in 10 of all children worldwide.” This includes approximately 79 million children in hazardous work endangering their health and safety. The report further states that: “The percentage of children in child labor remained unchanged over the four year period while the absolute number of children in child labor increased by over 8 million.” In addition, millions more are at risk due to the impacts of Covid-19. In mid-April every year, I would buy a couple of brightly coloured carp streamers or koinobori and thread a string through them to hang in my courtyard, in anticipation of the Japanese Children’s Day celebration which falls on May 5. Foreign students who have lived in Japan for a few years will know that some time in April and May each year towards the end of the sakura matsuri, colourful carp streamers could be seen fluttering in the wind all across the country, portraying a beautiful and heart-warming landscape against a backdrop of azure blue sky and pristine white clouds. During the April sakura matsuri in Tatebayashi city in the suburban Gunma prefecture, some 415 Somei-yoshino cherry trees flanking the banks of Tsuruuda River would start blooming.
